I posted this elsewhere in response to someone complaining about the overall writing quality, but I'll post it here just because.

I wouldn't say the writing is any worse, more so they've finally hit the point they need to shift away from the complex personal politics because all of the pieces are in place and winter is actually here after seven seasons. In fact if I'm honest I think if they went back to the politics at this point in some ways I'd kind of be dumbfounded, beyond Ceresi doing it, because there's a few hundred thousand dead people marching south right now and they have proof of it.

Earlier on they could afford to spend entire seasons setting up things to build for the finale to lead onto the next big buildup. They can't really do that now, and they know most people want the payoff thats been building since 2011.

Me? I loved the earlier seasons but I also really wanted my Dragon fights and zombies. They also haven't had any books to work off of for the past three seasons, just what they got told.

The writing in that episode was on par with a HL2RP server

There was a lot of reunion stuff, relaying of news, good dramatic moments- but a lot of it felt poorly executed because they were rushing shit along so quickly. They wanted to cram all these reunions and the drama into this first episode it feels like, so the others can be more devoted to the action, so a lot of it felt stilted and off. They might have been able to pace things a little bit better maybe, if they'd cut at least some of the jokes. Some campy stuff felt like it was in there for a decent reason:

Jon and Arya comparing swords and Jon asking if Arya was jealous of his Valyrian steel is a good example. Seems like it might have been a good way to show they still had this teasing naive sibling dynamic, or at least wanted to hold onto the memory of it, despite the shit they'd been through separately.

But it a lot of it got rushed along so it lost its oomph.

I'd argue, as I said above, thats just because they have six episodes to wrap it up in and unlike the earlier seasons they can't spend entire episodes on entirely passive things leading on to more passive plot-pushing stuff anymore.

The entire show has been building up to this and I feel like some people forget that. It was easy to forget the White Walkers were about in the earlier seasons because most of the focus was on what the people were doing before reality slapped them in the face.

I agree, absolutely. Said as much in my first post on this thread a few pages back: they really don't have any choice but to condense things or leave loose threads.
