Chivalry 2, huh. Well, it could've been a contender against Mordhau, had it not been announced for Epic Games Store. That stigma won't wear off for a while, and during that time Mordhau'll likely be churning out much more content.
Still, there could be something that makes it outperform the Steam competitor. Mordhau learned from the mistakes of Chivalry: Medieval Warfare, so Chivalry 2 not only has to also do the same, but it must also capitalize on something that makes it stand out from Mordhau.
  1. Melee combat mechanics? Doubtful, Mordhau has it refined off of Chivalry: Medieval Warfare to something even better. Yet, it's not so complex that it's "Arma 3 vs CS:GO gunplay" kind of difference. And I severely doubt they'll make it even more complex than what Mordhau has, that'd be over-designing it.
  2. Graphics? Straight nope, they both look pretty high-quality to me.
  3. Character customization? Perhaps, their website states "Enhanced player expression brings thousands of hilarious new voice-lines and deep character customization", but Mordhau's also got a pretty impressive character customization prowess that'll only increase when more clothing/armor and weapons are released. Plus, female characters are also coming at a later date, so that's even more customizability.
  4. Map/gamemode variety? There's potential for that, given that Mordhau's current map pool is rather small. But, Triternion (the devs) have ample time to either make more maps/gamemodes themselves, or give the community the means to do that via modding tools/SDK and Workshop.
  5. Weapon variety? Again doubtful, Mordhau has a pretty big selection and has some unique stuff seen in C:WM as well (patiste shields, fire and smoke bombs etc.) Not to mention perks make the combat even more different and there's horses and siege/counter-siege engines. Plus, toolbox adds a whole new element when people can build makeshift walls, spike thingies and even miniature ballistas.
  6. Story/Lore? Absolutely, it is Mordhau's strongest point and its greatest weakness that it doesn't rely on worldbuilding to be an appealing game. And while the lack of lore can bum out people who enjoy those things, it's not that big of a deal.
    1. But, I doubt Chivalry 2 will do story beyond what C:WM did, aka backstory behind the factions, conflict and individual maps. They would gamble too much with something like a singleplayer/co-op campaign, even if I would personally enjoy the heck outta that.
