potayto potahto, same deal. The rule is there to prevent things like items being traded away several times before a PK is concluded. It only convolutes and creates issues with refunds.

doesn't this create an issue though when party A dies, so party B picks up something, party C picks up something else and then trades/barters it away and when B either tries to get it back or place the stuff somewhere secure so it doesn't end up in circulation, they're technically complicit too?

I don't see the issue in that scenario. Party B does the right thing while C gets banned for breaking said rule.

They can get it refunded by an SA, while you can just ask for the one you have to be removed.
