In the first Die Hard, Holly McClane, the wife of John McLane, is estranged from his husband and works at Nakatomi Plaza in Los Angeles. John eventually saves the day. In Die Hard 2, Holly is taking a plane from Los Angeles to DC with John waiting for her.

They weren't divorced, but they weren't on the best of terms either. It's complicated, as love is. They find a common connection and John get transferred to the LAPD. In the third film, they had another fight and became estranged again. I don't think John is a good husband. It's implied that they do get back on good terms, but ultimately it doesn't last. By the 4th, they're divorced for good.

She lives in Los Angeles. I think the kids live there too. Karen took the kids. It's explained in the movie that John isn't really a good husband or father to his kids.

In this clip, it's clear why their marriage broke down. He's obviously shown in the series to be really stubborn. So, it can be assumed she got a really good offer in LA and John didn't want her to move, thus creating a divide. But I'm sure the marriage was doomed from the start.
