Let's say that we have 2 segments that touch the 90 degree in the triangle, one is 6 and the other is 8. We need to find out the length of the other segment which is x.

6^2 + 8^2 = x^2
6^2 + 8^2 = 100
100 = x^2
x = 10
and just to prove it's correct.
One segment that touches the 90 degree angle is 6, the other segment that touches it is x. The third segment is 10
6^2 + x^2 = 100
x^2 = 64
x is 8.
