As title, which s
hould I get? Thinking 1800x RN, but not 100% if it'll be worth it.
Current specs are:
  • AMD 7650k OC'ed to 3.9ghz
  • MSI 1060 6gb
  • Off-brand HDD, 1tb
  • Samsung SSD, 500gb
  • DDR3 RAM, 16gb
  • EVGA 800W G2 Gold

Also, GPU overclocking, got an MSI 1060 6gb, OC'ed at 2002mhz, should I try and increase? The card stays quite cool currently, but a higher FPS is always nice.

Literally no reason go go above the 1600x unless you plan to stream 2 different games at once. 6 cores and 12 threads is more than enough for anything you'd need to do.

Hell, even a 1600 would be fine for literally anything don't waste money on an 1800x lmfao

Honestly just seems like a waste of money to go above the 1600x but if you want to do vr gaming get a normal 1700 and OC it to around 3.8-4 GHZ, few of my friends did this and report smooth result.

WB overclocking? And what can you recommend? x
2002Mhz boost clock is good bro,
i say go big because if you can afford it then why the fuck not
thats what i did with my pc so its all future proof
maybe a 1700x over a 1800x just in case of significant bottleneck issues that could come up or maybe not
[doublepost=1510761597][/doublepost]booked a flight to your shitty dump shank city @Stalker just for that optimistic rate

have you bought a motherboard yet?
if not, get an i5 8400. it's basically on par with the 7700k for loads less and it has the future proof of 6c 6t.

If you have bought the motherboard, get a 1600 and overclock, if you don't wanna overclock go 1600x

don't get a 1800x or 1700x lol waste of money
if it's absolutely necessary go 1700 and overclock because 1800x is the same specs wise lol

Reeee intelfangays
Intel has no security with upgrades, with the AM4 chipset you're basically guaranteed upgradeability until 2020.
im not an intel fanboy lmao, its a good future proof cpu
I fucking own a ryzen cpu myself, I'm just talking straight about which cpus to buy

yeah, sure, ryzen has a better upgradibility path, but the 8400 has gaming performance like the 7700k (in context the 4790k is still a smashing gaming cpu) and it has 6c + 6t which makes it p damn futureproof considering recent games like assassins creed origins are requiring more threads and cores. and as well as that, the ryzen 1600 and 8400 are priced similarly and the 8400 massively outperforms the 1600 gaming performance wise. its really up to him but personally if I had the money I'd go 8400

Don't.

Go for either an AM4 MB or wait for cheaper Coffeelake boards to show up.

I made the mistake of investing in a 7600K just before Coffee lake was announced and now I feel shafted.

Before coffeelake was announced and launched I went with a Skylake i7-6700K since it was cheaper than the 7700K and practically the same performance. From a CompSci student's perspective you don't need more than 6-8 threads on your CPU if you plan to just game, and a better CPU won't make a difference in VR if your GPU is already pushing good frames on modern titles. Developers aren't releasing games that take advantage multi-core benefits that AMD is pushing for, and won't be for a few years still because AM4 is still a relatively new platform. I love AMD (I have an R9 Fury-X in my build lol) but Intel's chips still take the floor in terms of single core performance and that's where games can really shine.

Also, don't waste money on something you're not gonna utilise, do your own research, most of the stuff I learnt about hardware before uni were from a YouTube channel called LinusTechTips.

The AMD X variant doesn't mean what you think it means, the 1700 will overclock identically. AMD aren't like Intel, they didn't lock off the non X variants from overclocking in any way. Get a 1700 and overclock it.
[doublepost=1510880454][/doublepost]@Jamie just recently upgraded from an i5 to a 1700X. Personally I'll be jumping to either a 1700 and OC fairly soon or I'll upgrade whenever Zen+ comes out sometime early next year. The X variant is good but it isn't any different from the regular CPUs.

What's the difference between an x and regular then?
