Socialism is the owning of the means of production by the community, be that through anarchist, authoritarian, or mixed meanings. Communism is the end goal of Socialism, a moneyless, classless, stateless society run by the people. Socialism is the means to the end which is Communism.

But yes, Socialism is very vague, as its theory can be interpreted into a large variety of forms of praxis. The Socialism that has been attempted in China is not the same as the Socialism in Catalonia, Paris, Cuba, Vietnam, Russia, etc. etc.

And yes, he wasn't very into unions. He treated them the 'kulaks'. But given he was fine to have mass famine occur to continue exporting grain, he wasn't very humane in the early years either.
