The Instinctualist Volunteer Brigades are volunteer armed forces comprised predominantly of expatriates of Budapest, Geneva, and Kyiv, known for their sizeable radical humanist political traditions. The Brigades eschew Lambda patronage, opting to live off the land. They are noted for their hostility towards Lambda contractees and Combine garrisons alike, often operating as a 'third force' in the Post-Citadel conflict.

3. Gyalogsági Oszlop 'Kossuth Lajos'​

The 3rd Infantry Column, comprised primarily of volunteers from Budapest, largely owe their culture to the dissident loyalism of the Hungarian humanists, often criticized for their philo-Combinism. Named after Hungarian revolutionary Lajos Kossuth, the Column expresses the belief in the position of humanity as inheritors to and custodians of Combine technology. They are known for looting and hoarding CMB equipment, going so far as to engage Lambda-contracted cells they suspect possess CMB machinery. Most infantrymen of the 3rd practice gene modification, as well as customarily bleaching their skin and donning Civil Protection trousers, which has occasionally led to them being mistaken for rogue functionaries or defectors. The Column does not accept Vortigaunt attachés.

'Lajos Kossuth' is notable for hosting an auxiliary of Polish irregulars often engaged in reconnaissance and harassment.
