yo, if im playing something like watch dogs 2, that is taking up all my Video memory, and im playing at low settings, at like 40 FPS or 50, and the temperature is 40-50, and then suddenly, my PC freezes, and goes to 0.5 frames a sec or something, for like 3 seconds, and makes really weird loud static noises, then it shuts down and is really hot, and i can smell some odd burnt plastic from it, yet the GPU was only at 40-50, can it be the processor?

oh also, i may want to add that the thermal paste (might be source of smell???) is like 3 years old as thats when i got this computer, pre-built

Here, a bunch of info from dxdiag. It's in swedish but i think it can be understood @Bork

also this computer i bought in like 2012-2013, it's pre-built as i said so idk anything

(this all started happening today aswell, except i have had issues in the past but they've gone back and forth, my idle temperatures are 30-35 for GPU and 20 something for CPU1 according to afterburner)

alirhgt so your dxdiag doesnt state which specific model your GPU is, so it could be anything from the Rx 200 series

try speccy, its a nice program, also shows the temp of all your hardware stuff

    Update on this issue.
    It started occuring yesterday.
It has now gotten more serious as this morning, I turned my computer on and played gmod for 1 hour before my PC shut down and I could smell something weird from it.
It wasn't even hot when it overheated. (So I think might be heatsink?)

maybe stop playing shit if you keep SMELLING something from it, which can further damage your faulty hardware

I had a similar problem with the processor myself. It was rather funny, when I found the solution.

If you go into your advanced power settings and turn your maximum processor power from 100% to 95%, it tends to stop overheating.

(No I'm not an IT guy, do not know how that worked when I did it. I am just used to dealing with computers that want to commit suicide every time I start them)

But uh, my processor temps are at under 50 all the time?

this has been an issue for months
first it was for an entire month that it always used to overheat, then one day, suddenly the computer was fine, never overheated for like a month, then it suddenly starts smelling and shit and overheating again?

    Mine were too.

If it was a GPU issue, you's start seeing graphical artifacts on screen. If it was power/battery related, it would simply not start or simply warn you of it at the start. If it was the heatsinks/cooling issue, it would heat up to high hell and probably be enough to double as a heater in the cold winter nights.

But CPU means it just goes PLOOF, in the middle of something.

Where can I turn the power down to 95 then?
Also, like 10 seconds before my computer shuts off, my screen freezes and whatever sound was being played as it froze, is like a static weird noise for 5 sec

If you're on a laptop/portable power source(aka battery), just check your power settings.

If you're on a desktop, fiddle around in the control panel. A fast google search should yield some answers for you. :grinning:

ye ye but what about the fact that SOMETIMES, when playing, it does freeze my screen for a few seconds and make a loud noise in my headphones then it goes back to being fine for 5 sec before my computer shuts off

Yep that's the processor alright. The moment before it commits seppuku, the whole other equipment connected to it stops getting any input from the processor itself, thus they keep doing/showing the last thing they were.

If you're starting to smell things from your computer, you shouldn't be turning it on again. You should be getting the computer serviced.

Not always the case. It tends to get more psycological more you see problems coming from your computer.

Heck I almost died inside when the oil indicator was a second late to shut off as I started the car. It's a new car too. ("New" being 22 years old) (Maybe I'm too paranoid about the prices we have to pay for repairs here. Eugh.)

Fuzzed electronics is a pretty distinct smell - if you can smell said smell, don't risk frying all your components. If he wants to, be my guest, but I wouldn't.

moral of the story is, get it serviced and maybe it's time to upgrade your processor buddy

I've dealt with the smell of burning plastic for quite long after I spilled coffee on my old HP Pavilion dv6. After a while, the battery died and the CPU's cooling fans stopped as well. Had to do what father told and kept the damn thing straight outside with... Idk, probably arcane magic at that point. That laptop was basically living on duct tape and hot glue
