"Space, the final frontier.
These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise.
It's continuing mission, to explore strange new worlds.
To seek out new life and new civilizations.

To boldly go where no-one has gone before."

This is an announcement post for a crossover I will be writing. Please PM me if you would like to be a beta reader before the chapters are posted.
I do not own Star Trek, nor Half-Life 2.

"Captain's Log, Stardate 47225.7,

Commander La Forge has completed the installation of our new warp core.

We are preparing to test its capabilities."

Captain Picard walks out of his ready room, and into the busy bridge. He observes his surroundings, the officers working on the noisily beeping computers, and the gentle hum that was ever present no matter where you were on the ship. Though these were not on his mind, what was though was enough to turn Jean-Luc's mood visibly sour. He lets out a disappointed sigh, as he looks slightly downward towards the floor.

"Something wrong, sir?" asked Picard's First Officer, Commander Riker as he approached the Captain with a concerned tone to his face.

Picard turned towards his First Officer, his face regaining his professional, neutral composure. He then responded to Riker's query "I just got a message from Starfleet Command." Riker's neck straightened upwards, he blinked before simply asking "Bad news?"
"You could say that." Answered Picard. "I've been invited to the Annual Starfleet Admirals' Banquet." said the Captain in a tone indicating that he was not at all excited to be a part of such an ostentatious event.

"My condolences." were Riker's only words. The two of them then proceeded to their chairs, before sitting down, the ergonomically designed seats well formed to give them as much comfort as they could to the two officers. The brief silence was broken when the Captain disappointingly said "I've managed to avoid it for the past six years but now it would seem that my luck has run out." he sighed, before continuing "I can't think of anything more tedious, fifty admirals shaking hands, making dull conversation. Uninteresting food, boring speeches..."

Commander Riker's face shifted uncomfortably as he listened to the details of the psychological horror that his Captain, whose brilliant leadership saved the lives of not only the Enterprise's crew on many occasions but potentially those of the Federation as a whole would be exposed to. He spoke back up, asking a simple question that would likely not be the solution for the captain's predicament. "Can't you think of some excuse to get out of it?"

Captain Picard shot down the idea, explaining "After six years, Number One, I don't think I have any excuses left." He continued to stare out onto the bridge, preparing himself for the hours of boredom ahead of himself. Commander Riker then half-smiled, half-cringed, as he felt sympathy for the captain's misfortune.

The moment of silence was broken as the bridge's speakers came to life. "La Forge to bridge. Warp power at your discretion, captain."
"Acknowledged" replied Picard as he immediately shot up from his chair, his first officer following his actions like a shadow. "Ensign Gates, set a course for Starbase 219." The young ensign punched in the coordinates to her console. "Engage." Captain Jean-Luc Picard characteristically ordered. Then immediately after the order was given, the entire viewscreen was flooded with bright, blinding light, and an ear-piercing wail as the entire ship was shaken violently as if about to be ripped apart at any moment.

Let's take a moment to interrupt the story.
Suppose that all the universes within the multiverse are somewhat connected together in some manner.
Let's also suppose that with every decision, with every event that occurs that could have had an alternative outcome, another universe is born. That girl or guy you liked in school but were to afraid to ask out? In another timeline, you could have had kids.
The accident that took the life of someone dear to you? Perhaps in another time, they survived.
The interphasic organisms that should have infested the Enterprise's new warp core? What if they infested another ship instead?
What if on the day that the Enterprise should have stood still, adrift in space due to a faulty warp core, the warp core worked perfectly, at the same exact same moment in time that a resonance cascade occurred in a neighboring universe, sending ripples throughout the multiverse.
The right ship, in the wrong place, at the wrong time, activating it's warp coils in a region of spacetime particularly sensitive to extradimensional activity.
An interesting concept, is it not?

Interim Administrator Wallace Breen sat behind his ornate mahogany desk, tapping away at a nearby touchscreen, reading the weekly reports collected from the various Sector Administrators around the planet. He wasn't pleased with the decline of Overwatch assimilation rates and planned to correct the issue soon. "Perhaps a five percent reallocation from stalker production should resolve the issue." thought Breen. Though his thoughts were interrupted when he received an emergency alert from the Union's radar telescope network.
Curious, he opened the message, and after spending what seemed like hours staring at the report. He turned his chair around and proceeded to report this alarming occurrence to a certain slug-like being.

AT 0316 ZULU, A LARGE-MAGNITUDE PORTAL EVENT OCCURRED IN GEOSTATIONARY ORBIT. THIS EVENT LASTED FOR PRECISELY 10 MINUTES, 32 SECONDS BEFORE DISSIPATION. WITHIN 1 KILOMETER OF THE PORTAL'S FORMER EPICENTER, AN UNIDENTIFIED, METALLIC OBJECT MEASURING AN ESTIMATED 640 METERS IN LENGTH WAS DETECTED VIA RADAR EXACTLY 33 SECONDS AFTER THE DISSIPATION EVENT. RADIO TELESCOPES WERE ABLE TO PROCURE THIS IMAGE OF THE OBJECT.

The Enterprise's red alert system was blaring it's shrill, continuous wail throughout the violently shaking ship. Many crewmen struggled to maintain their balance to maintain their posts as the over half-kilometer vessel was flung between dimensions like a ragdoll. On the bridge of the Enterprise, Captain Picard kept his composure as usual, this wasn't to say that he was not experiencing fear at this moment. Probably the only one who could really say that would be Commander Data, but the Captain has been through far worse, and so he steeled his mind and concentrated on coordinating the ship to have the best chance of survival during this emergency.

"Ensign Gates, Report!"

The female flight controller seemed frantic, she was tapping away at the console faster than she had ever in her life, trying desperately to wrest control of the ship from the sudden wormhole that had appeared, though she knew that from the sheer size of this dimensional aperture that it was in vain.

"Captain! Sensors are erratic but it looks like at least a class four wormh- AAAAGH!!!" The ensign's answer was cut short as an EPS relay overloaded and caused the entire console to explode, the shockwave sending her barreling backwards against a nearby wall, the impact against the bulkhead snapping her neck, ending her life almost instantly.

Merde. Thought the captain, he proceeded to not so tap, but more like nearly bash his combadge, opening a communications link to engineering, he barked "Bridge to Engineering, Commander La Forge report your status!"

...

Data and La Forge were furiously tapping away at various consoles, despite the warp core's coolant systems and backup coolant systems operating at maximum capability, the core's pressure levels were somehow reaching dangerous ratings. Commander Data in particular was moving so quickly that one could hardly distinguish his hands from an ancient 20th century propeller. They managed to vent a significant chunk of their warp plasma into space, giving them enough time to prevent an all-out warp breach, which would have undoubtedly annihilated the entire ship. The rest of engineering was similarly frenzied, engineers both young and seasoned were racing throughout the room, one of the consoles had already overloaded, resulting in three crewmen being critically injured. Their colleagues, well trained in first aid were able to stabilize them, but they would need to be taken to sickbay as quickly as possible. Through the cacophany of yelling, rumbling, and of course the shrill wail of the klaxons, Captain Picard's voice somehow made itself clear through the communication system.

"Bridge to Engineering, Commander La Forge report your status!"

Geordi immediately responded to the captain's order, replying "Captain, the warp core is nearing critical pressure! We've managed to delay a breach by venting warp plasma but we've only got maybe three minutes tops before a warp core breach!" Before Captain picard could reply, all of the Enterprise's power systems seemingly shut down save for emergency power reserved for engineering, and at the same time the shaking suddenly stopped. After a few seconds, the power came back online, and the Warp core similarly seemed to calm down as well.

"Commander La Forge, what just happened?"

Geordi seemed dumbstruck, the warp core was operating fine one minute, going insane the next, and then calm again minutes later. The only possible explanation could be that it was somehow tied to the anomaly that caused the entire ship to shake violently. He regained his senses and replied to the Captain "I'm not sure captain, it seemed as soon as we fired up the new warp core the ship started quaking and the core was about to breach, then it all just stopped. Core temperature and pressures are at nominal levels, but we have three people in critical condition with plasma burns from an EPS overload. The ship's structural integrity has been weakened but still remains at 90%, should be good enough until we undergo repairs, Captain."

"Acknowledged, all senior staff report to the ready room, Picard out."
