What people often forget is that having rapid on-server change is all well and good in principle but Neb is not, despite all claims to the contrary, a tight knit community with a history of positively working with change they themselves asked for.

In fact it typically ends up with people begging for the changes they wanted undone or edited or whatever two weeks in because, shock, they themselves didn't actually think about it.

There is every reason not to just throw caution to the wolves in regards to Neb, because people will generally bite the hand that feeds if it doesn't work out how they expected it to in their heads and they aren't the ones who actually have to put the effort in to make sure things go smoothly to begin with.

I mean honestly it is an important part of the HL2 setting.

Its just how you go about it. Dystopia doesn't need to be 100% doom-and-gloom.

the 100% doom and gloom dystopia's have a place in tv/movies/game but not roleplay

children of men is a dystopia

it doesn’t have cops banning everything

it doesn’t have “1984-esque” elements (another buzzword. fuck 1984)

the dystopia comes purely from worldbuilding and atmosphere

Children of Men is also a vastly different style of dystopia.

Some things are banned on server (not all, mind you) for the sake of giving rebels obstacles and giving regular folks incentive to actually resist.

As I've said before though I don't agree with making these things immutable in Helix (far from it actually).

well yeah, but it’s an example of using atmosphere to establish a dystopia rather than just a bunch of hamfisted nonsense a la hl2rp

    tear the loyalist system apart

    remove the points

make tiers awarded for being a worker within the union hierarchy (i.e. factions). The more vital your position the higher your tier (i.e. managers and senior members will have higher tiers than junior ones).

If you're not in a faction, then the only way to get a tier is through being directly awarded by the Civil Authority, either for being a grade a+ snitch or buddying up with your Senator pal you've known since the bluesuit days. This mean a Senator can fast track their friend into a position on a pointless committee and reward informants accordingly.

We can even extend this power to Tribunes, although to a lesser extent, allowing them to maybe cash in on some political brownie points from the masses.

It makes no sense from a gameplay or lore perspective to award people who just work with points that let them live a lavish life after having worked for a while.

Make it so being a conformist actually means something and at least make it so there's some semblance of loyalism within the system. The system should feel like an explicit class divide where the higher you go the more distanced you are from the working man. To meet this end, I also think more heavy handed rewards should be introduced and some of the lower tier ones moved a bit higher up the ladder.

''but what about people who actually get points through reporting, what about those?''

I'm glad you asked unnamed user, because I have a rather elegant solution.

You can still get ''civil deeds'' however there's no intrinsic value attached to them, they're just that: Deeds. If you think you've been a good citizen, you can ask a member of the Civil Authority to review your file to maybe give you a low tier, which should still be a significant leg up from the average citizen.

    tl;dr:

    • Remove the points
    • Make factions the most common way to earn tiers. The better you perform in them, the better tier you'll get
    • Give the Civil Authority a lot of power over non-faction conformists, allowing for more corruption and nepotism that would be prevalent within a system such as this
    • Further the divide between conformists and regular citizens to cash in on that class divide action that can give you that dystopia feel within the actual gameplay of the server

that's all i have to say ok goodbye

I remember that @Whilty had a really nice suggestion regarding the loyalty tiers but I honestly don't know what happened to it - pretty sure that it was left with no response

hot take omso should not possess any kind of power over the Senate as a whole and should only be a liaison between civil protection and the civil authority
