Not sure where to make this thread, but I guess General is safe enough. I think it's common knowledge that Willard and Nebulous are considered to be in a rivalry as players move between the two servers. I'm going to share in this thread my own experience with Willard, its problems, what it does right and what it does wrong. I wouldn't call this a review of their server, rather a highlighter of the problems of HL2RP which have become trends.

I've been playing on Willard since it launched, which would have been about December. The initial launch went okay, and garnered a good amount of players. IC groups formed, and events were actually pretty rare outside of workshifts. It seemed people were attracted to this new codebase, as well as "turn based combat", and the new "skills" system and business system and so on.

But after some amount of time, people saw through the shiny new veneer. The population dwindled and the community management were forced to shut the server down and return to the drawing board. Around this time, Mendelevius left the community and retitled the SFM animation he made for it "They don't care about you." I don't really know why he left, but I've been in some discord calls with him where he said the admins were just handing out scripts to people, with a clear bias. This did actually happen on the initial launch, as well as a plethora of other problems (Some of this still happens to this day but I digress).

A thread was made by "Madcombat", in the complaints section of the Willard forums (which can be found here: https://willard.network/forums/threads/lets-talk-about-launch-and-the-problems-faced.1053/).

He wanted to discuss the problems the server had experienced, such as minging (which was a very prevalent problem despite the extensive staff team). Lack of citizen RP, despite promises to create a server with "citizen-centric" roleplay and "Events UNLIKE all the other servers out there". The over-reliance on GMs to get anything done, such as running businesses, which should be something doable without an admin holding your hand every step of the way.

One user put it very well:

This guy is suspiciously banned, but who knows why?

The thread was then closed by one of the admins, which will become a trend of sorts.

One notable incident that happened on the "V1" launch, as they like to call it, is the sad fate of the "Helvetican Party". In a very short amount of time, the party garnered a lot of members, especially from the CMU. It's influence was growing and it finally seemed that there would be some thematic changes to the server. But one day, the party's leader was invited to the office of the CA. The party leader was then assassinated by two admins roleplaying as hitmen. Before they shot him in the head, one of the admins said "The game was rigged from the start." before PK'ing him.

If that doesn't sum up the Willard experience, then I don't know what will.

In the months to come, the server would be down completely, but devlogs would be posted on the forum and on the discord server. Atle would also continue working on C24 V3 which is almost completed as of writing this thread. Nothing comes to my mind during this time, so I'll move onto the Beta which launched recently

The beta is worse than the initial launch in ALMOST every way. I personally made a thread about the beta's problems which can be found here: https://willard.network/forums/threads/the-beta-complaint-mega-thread.1760/

The tl;dr is:
"Everything feels disconnected and isolated from each other. The CCA doesn't do much, the CPs are bog standard, maybe even sub-par, and patrolling is the most you'll see them do. Citizens work without incentive. Loyalism is not in. Housing is not in. Food and water is useless. Work rp for two weeks was a bad idea, but it had potential."

The thread received 2k views, and 98 replies. It was probably the biggest complaint thread in the community's history. The staff quickly closed the thread only after two days, which is exactly what happened with the V1 launch I mentioned earlier. The staff brush off criticism by using their current playercount as a sign they're doing well, and by pointing out that it's a beta (which somehow means no one can criticize it).

I really do want Willard to succeed as a community, but they've already messed up twice. The good server pop they have right now is temporary, as it was on the initial launch. Once the "V2" launch finally happens, they'll be using C24 v3 which will, unfortunately, attract people to the server for a time, and ensnaring them in another cycle of lies and disappointment.

So if you criticize Willard on their forums, your thread will get locked, and if you bring it to discord you will get muted for a week.

The admins are on damage control duty more often then they run events on the server.

I want this thread to be civil, concise, and to the point. I do not want attacks on any individual's character either. This is a thread dedicated to modern HL2RP and its many, many shortcomings.

Enjoy the ride.

it's a rivalry in the same way a 30 year old man on tenure with a pension and a 16 year old in secondary school could have a rivalry

honestly

to reel it back into a discussion

willard's biggest mistake was spending all his time on advertising and hyping it up over mechanics
hell, even the turn based combat system felt more like a show of "look what we can do, we're unique and special" over a fully fledged and realized mechanic within the server

nebulous stuck to what was tried and true, and any time it makes a change, it is trialed and tested beforehand

i find the rivalry shtick that hl2rp communities have very dumb and petty and i personally don't care

you aren't gonna get a civilized discussion on here, it's gonna be us shitting on them, they shit on us back, repeat the same shit we've heard a thousand times about atle or whatever blah blah, poke some fun at them post logs from their discord before this thread also gets inevitably locked and then go on with our day

Yeah you're right. Really, I made this thread to let people here know about the current state of things.

This was me, and it was very saddening. Luxury, Rogue Synapse, myself, and a few others had went over there with the idea. We were excited and it went well for a while. However, upon their first launch the CCA was in shambles. They went through 2 leads in about a week and the guy running the CWU ended up becoming the lead. When it first went down, I had been taken into the Nexus, spoken to him, and then was being escorted out. Cops seemed to be on our side, but I was stopped and taken by a suited man into the nexus. There I was greeted by 3 admin characters, masked up, and with guns. They threatened to shoot me and “get a body double” from around the world. Instead I just killed myself and appealed the PK later because fuck that. A big shitfest later in Discord and they unPKed me. The next day they brought me in and did the epic Fallout New Vegas.

There were some other details that I’ll leave out such as them trying to “Fallout New Vegas” me at the start by “shooting me and leaving me for dead” or the problems that their “HR department” (their OSI) had. (Such as shooting up cops)

6 months later and not much has changed. There are some genuinely good people in their ranks that I’ve spoken to and helped out. They are trying their best against a flawed system.

I’ve been told myself that the staffing system is still very broken, and their event team is worse off. Anything I’ve said has basically been brushed off as “Well, you’ve been shitting on us for 6 months so fuck off.” Anyways, I hope the good people end up working it out or something.

Best of luck to Willard. I might try it again but my hopes are not very high.

I dunno, I got on last week and some GM found it funny to spawn aborted fetus scripts during roleplay, and when I asked him why he did that he basically just said "Because funny"

Not related to the thread but can I get my name changed to "Takyon"? It's the name I used for everything, and I haven't used this place seriously before.

everyone wants a business permit and sell stuff
but the cwu are useless and basically do the same **smash rubble and get rid of it** style rp as a workshift
the only ones that grant permits are also 75 percent of the time afk or not on
or just ignore you

GMs are also super slow and most of the admin team are slow
the guide and requirement to freeing a vortigaunt is also a joke and basically grants combine a huge ooc advantage which is practically metagaming
