It gets worse. Hospitals can charge whatever they damn well please; insurance charges are a black box in the US.
I lacerated my pinky (12 stitches in the local A&E/ER) in 2012. In 2014, I had a surgery for a salivary gland tumor in Santa Fe. The stitches ended up costing $2,500. The tumor surgery (which included biopsy, PET scan, and overnight stay) was $2,000 - all because the hospital accepted my insurance.
