Fun fact - that's actually a myth!

It came from a movie guide that claimed (for some reason) there was an alternate cut, but in both versions Kong was the winner of the final fight as confirmed by Toho themselves. Even the US dialogue makes clear Kong won (but they added a Godzilla roar right at the end).

I can genuinely see Legendary having Godzilla win as a sign of respect the same way Toho let Kong win in the original as a sign of respect though.
