Best advice anyone could ever give you about mapping on source

don't bother

I'd advise you to work with unreal instead unless it's because you want to specifically make maps for source.

hammer is a piece of shit as is the source engine so limitations will fuck you up

Once you get to grips with the basic tools on hammer, you just need practice and a understanding of the engine's limits.
The sdk wiki documentation is all fine and dandy, but I actually learnt how to map using 3kliksphillip's early hammer tutorials since they were edited to be really quick and easy to digest.

If you ever get round to trying, drop me a message and I can help you through some of your roadblocks when you hit them.

I just want to try something different to be honest, gives me something to do in my free time

I'd actually encourage using source for your first time.

There's no future in the source engine, it's pointless learning it if you want to actually apply your mapping ability somewhere else in the future

never actually started, the thing I did was a scene build out of curiosity, if I wanted to do one I'd try my damnest to make it like the concept art, so I'd need to co-ordinate a team of mappers and artists to make it work

Would love to do it, hell I'd even fund a endeavour like that.
