don't bother
I'd advise you to work with unreal instead unless it's because you want to specifically make maps for source.
hammer is a piece of shit as is the source engine so limitations will fuck you up

The sdk wiki documentation is all fine and dandy, but I actually learnt how to map using 3kliksphillip's early hammer tutorials since they were edited to be really quick and easy to digest.
If you ever get round to trying, drop me a message and I can help you through some of your roadblocks when you hit them.

never actually started, the thing I did was a scene build out of curiosity, if I wanted to do one I'd try my damnest to make it like the concept art, so I'd need to co-ordinate a team of mappers and artists to make it workLooks good. Did you ever complete that desert city map?
