i've considered working on the gamemode previous times in the past

also @spectre is here to claim the throne with me
Well, -cough- -cough-, in case you're interested, here's what's left of the original doc I've made around a year ago. It's unfinished because reasons.

kill me
I need to save this somewhere before LP dies completely.

Might returning to this later this summer, after I finally get you to play Mass Effect and actually contribute enough to the community so that I have my rep gud.

Warning! Contains A LOT of Lore material not made by me. You may skip it if you want. It's not necessary. And also... My grammar sucks.
The reason I wrote so many about game's lore is that I saw quite a few people who have played the game before.

What is Mass Effect RP?

Mass Effect RP is a Clockwork-based role-playing gamemode for Garry's Mod. It takes place within a Science Fiction setting, following the lore of the critically acclaimed Mass Effect trilogy. In the proposed lore, however, the gameplay will be somewhat reminiscent of the Metro series; namely, faction-based warfare. The gamemode takes place in a disabled, partially destroyed space station. Mass Effect RP is going to include multiple playable races, mechanics, factions and it's own exclusive map that is planned for release within the next 3-4 months.

Brief description of the Mass Effect universe and timeline:

In 2148, human explorers on Mars uncovered a long-ruined alien observation post, with a surviving data cache that proved aliens had studied Cro-Magnon humans millennia ago. While religions tried to assimilate this discovery into their doctrine, a global rush began to decipher the petabytes of data from the outpost. Discovering information on a mass relay orbiting Pluto, explorers managed to open the Charon Relay and discovered it led to Arcturus systems. With the help of the fledglingSystems Alliance, humans expanded to other systems, opening any mass relays they could find, which resulted them into contacting the rest of tha Galactic Community. Nowdays, the Humanity is a member of the Citadel council and is one of the most powerful and agressive species in the galaxy.

All three Mass Effect games take place in the 2180s. There are some "Core objects" in the galaxy that became base for Galactic communications, economy and transport systems. These objects are called Mass Relays. Mass Relays are giant objects of unknown origin that can quickly "throw" matter in in a certain direction with speed hundreds of times faster light-speed.

There is a giant space station of unknown origin called The Citadel. It's been discovered by the Asari several thousands years ago. It has now became the official "Capital of the Galaxy".

Just so that you know what happened in the Dunai facility, I have listed the events that happened in it for a short period of time before our RP:

The gamemode takes place right after the ending of the final game. All Mass Relays are destroyed, resulting in the isolation of different systems from one another. Actual gameplay takes place at a Cerberus facility known as Dunai. It was originally oriented for study of several different species, humanity included, and is situated on an asteroid in an unmapped part of the galaxy. After its discovery, it was used as an improvised prison construct, holding many prisoners of varying species and crimes.

The destruction of the only nearby relay caused chaos on the station and led to a violent prison revolt. The guards turned an emergency beacon on, which was answered by a nearby Alliance ship that proceeded to dock at the facility. But they weren't the only one to do so: Blood Pack and Blue Suns mercenaries did so too. Blood Pack gangsters destroyed all docked ships, accidentally destroying their own in the crossfire. At the moment, most of the facility is controlled by the prisoners and the Alliance, while Cerberus guards and Blue Suns were pushed to the northern part of the station. With no ability to escape, both sides slowly start forming their own communities and camps.

The game is going to be faction-based, with several default factions. Players are free to create their own factions as well. This list contains the gamemode's default factions:

Paragon factions:
6kdCSeL.png

The Systems Alliance is the representative body of Earth and all human colonies in Citadel space. Backed by Earth's most powerful nations, the Alliance has become humanity's military, explorers, and economic spearhead. While the Alliance is relatively new to the galactic community, it has already made a name for itself, gaining humans an embassy on the Presidium. The Alliance is governed by a parliament based atArcturus Station, which also serves as the Alliance's capital. After a large Alliance starship docked with the station following revolution, it was destroyed by Blood Pack gangsters, stranding the survivors aboard the station. You have to apply on forums to join them. They stand on the side of the Prisoners. Both factions share the same territories and have no rights to attack each-other.

Neutral factions:

D9VhR5F.png

Originally a small Terminus Systems vorcha gang, the Blood Pack was transformed into a mercenary legion by visionary krogan battlemaster Ganar Wrang. Exiled for striking a female in anger, Wrang obsessed over reclaiming his lost status. Banned from Citadel Space, the Blood Pack bribes its way through spaceports into armed conflicts across the galaxy. Priding themselves for accepting otherwise untouchable contracts, the Blood Pack rejects bodyguarding and security in favor of cases requiring minimal oversight and maximum violence. Blood Pack appears to be, for the most part, made entirely ofvorcha and krogan members, though they also use varren as war beasts. Blood pack warriors are very aggressive and prefer to stand on their own, which means they are prone to attacking anyone, regardless of faction.

Renegade factions:
NBZJsJc.png

Cerberus is a human-survivalist paramilitary group led by the enigmatic Illusive Man. Cerberus' core belief is that humans deserve a greater role in the galactic community, and that the Systems Alliance is too hamstrung by law and public opinion to stand up effectively to the other Citadelraces. Cerberus supports the principle that any methods of advancing humanity's ascension are entirely justified, including illegal or dangerous experimentation, terrorist activities, sabotage and assassination. Cerberus operatives accept that these methods are brutal, but believe history will vindicate them. Nevertheless, both the Systems Alliance and the Citadel Council have declared Cerberus to be a terrorist organization and will prosecute identified Cerberus agents accordingly. They own the Dunai facility. You have to apply on forums to join the Cerberus Guards, however, you can apply in-game for a job of Cerberus Scientist.

RJzDRAh.png

The Blue Suns are a "private security organization," in reality a mercenary outfit, operating in theSkyllian Verge. The Blue Suns have a reputation for being both discreet and ruthlessly efficient, and as such charge a sizable fee. Blue Suns mercenaries often have a tattoo of a blue sun somewhere on their body. During high-risk jobs, the tattoo would be removed with an acid wash to prevent them being identified, then reapplied once the job was finished. Blue Suns consist mostly ofbatarians, turians, and humans. They are also known to employ mechanized support on occasion:YMIR, FENRIS, and LOKI Mechs. They work with Cerberus, which means they share the same territories on the station.

Mass Effect lore is massive. Galaxy is populated by a variety of different races. This list includes canonical races that are going to be playable and their short descriptions, including their gameplay stats and abilites. But first, default stats that are being used to compare each race's starting characteristics:

  • Health - 100 HP - Maximum amount of health a player can have;
  • Maximum inventory space - 5 kilograms - Amount of space in player's completely empty inventory. Can be upgraded.
  • Regeneration time - 1 HP per 15 seconds - Ability to regenerate 50% of health without any medical assistance. Can be increased with usage of adrenaline or stimpacks. Disables if player is sick;
  • Movement speed - Walking - 5 km/h; Jogging - 12 km/h; Sprinting - 20 km/h; - Speed of player's movement. Can be increased with usage of stimpacks or adrenaline. Decreases if player is sick or wearing heavy armor;
  • Strength - 7-15 points per hit - Strength of player's hit with fists. If player is using a melee weapon, it's damage points are being added to player's amount of strength points. (Example - Player has strength of 17. Melee weapon has damage of 30 DPs. 30 + 17 = 47 damage points.) Decreases if player is sick or has low stamina;

List of playable races:

  • Humans, from the planet Earth, are the newest sentient species of notable size to enter the galactic stage and are the most rapidly expanding and developing. They independently discovered a Protheandata cache on Mars in 2148, and the mass relay networks shortly thereafter.
Gameplay features ans stats:
  • + 50% more inventory space;
  • + 25% faster skill learning speed;
  • + Start with basic knowledge of engineering / mechanics;
  • ± Full of memes;
  • - Other races don't trust you;

  • Turian; Known for their militaristic and disciplined culture, the turians were the third race to join theCitadel Council. They gained their Council seat after defeating the hostile krogan for the Council during the Krogan Rebellions. The turians deployed a salarian-created biological weapon called thegenophage, which virtually sterilised the krogan and sent them into a decline. The turians then filled the peacekeeping niche left by the once-cooperative krogan, and eventually gained a Council seat in recognition of their efforts. Originally from the planetPalaven, turians are best known for their military role, particularly their contributions of soldiers and starships to theCitadel Fleet. They are respected for their public service ethic—it was the turians who first proposed creating C-Sec—but are sometimes seen as imperialist or rigid by other races. There is some animosity between turians andhumans, largely due to the turian role in the First Contact War. This bitterness is slowly beginning to heal—as shown by the cooperation of the two races on the construction of the SSV Normandy—but many turians still resent humans, and vice versa.
Gameplay features ans stats:
  • + Immune to radiation;
  • + Immune to fire damage;
  • + 10 minutes of sleep can cure any disease;
  • - 10% less inventory space;
  • - You can only eat specialized turian food because of your race's specific genetic structure;
  • - 10% slower regeneration speed;
  • - Cold does damage over time;

  • Salarians; The second species to join the Citadel, the salarians are warm-blooded amphibians native to the planet Sur'Kesh. Salarians possess a hyperactive metabolism; they think fast, talk fast, and move fast. To salarians, other species seem sluggish and dull-witted, especially theelcor. Unfortunately, their metabolic speed leaves them with a relatively short lifespan; salarians over the age of 40 are a rarity. Salarians are known for their observational capability and non-linear thinking. This manifests as an aptitude for research and espionage. They are constantly experimenting and inventing, and it is generally accepted that they always know more than they are letting on.
Gameplay features ans stats:
  • + Doubled skill learning speed;
  • + 20% faster regeneraion speed;
  • ± There is no visual difference between males and females;
  • - 30% less health;
  • - 10% less inventory space;

  • Asari; The asari, native to the planet Thessia, are ̶b̶l̶u̶e̶-̶s̶k̶i̶n̶n̶e̶d̶ ̶l̶e̶s̶b̶i̶a̶n̶ ̶p̶r̶o̶s̶t̶i̶t̶u̶t̶e̶s̶ ̶f̶r̶o̶m̶ ̶o̶u̶t̶e̶r̶ ̶s̶p̶a̶c̶e often considered the most influential and respected sentient species in the galaxy, and are known for their elegance, diplomacy, and biotic aptitude. This is partly due to the fact that the asari were among the earliest races to achieve interstellar flight after the Protheans, and the first to discover and settle the Citadel. A mono-gender race, the asari are distinctly feminine in appearance and possess maternal instincts. Their unique physiology, expressed in a millennium-long lifespan and the ability to reproduce with a partner of any gender or species, gives them a conservative yet convivial attitude toward other races. Favoring compromise and cooperation over conflict, the asari were instrumental in proposing and founding the Citadel Council and have been at the heart of galactic society ever since.
Gameplay features ans stats:
  • + Basic biotic powers / Magic;
  • + Telepathy on very short distances;
  • + Start with basic knowledge of medicine;
  • ± The race is mono-gendered, so, only female characters;
  • ± You can have sex using telepathy and actually get pregnant, regardless of partner's gender;
  • ± Your brain makes everyone think you're hot using telepathy, regardless of their race, age or gender. Even the asexual salarians. Don't ask why, it's just some Bioware employee's sexual fantasies.
  • - 10% less health;
  • - 20% less strength;

  • Krogan; The krogan are a species of large reptilian bipeds native to the planet Tuchanka, a world known for its harsh environments, scarce resources, and overabundance of vicious predators. The krogan managed to not only survive on their unforgiving homeworld, but actually thrived in the extreme conditions. Unfortunately, as krogan society became more technologically advanced, so did their weaponry. The end result is that they destroyed their homeworld in a nuclear war that reduced their race into primitive warring tribes.
Gameplay features ans stats:
  • + 50% more health;
  • + 30% stronger;

  • - 50% slower learning speed due to being not very smart;
  • - 40% slower moving speed;

  • Hanar; The hanar are a species resembling Earth's jellyfish and are one of the few non-bipedalCitadel races. Hanar are known for their intense politeness when speaking, and their strong religious beliefs regarding the Protheans, whom they refer to as "the Enkindlers".
Gameplay features ans stats:
  • + Strongest biotic powers / Magic;
  • + Immune to any kinds of poisoning;
  • + You can communicate on long distances using telepathy;
  • + 30% faster regeneration;
  • + 60% more stamina;
  • ± You are extemely religious;
  • ± Technically genderless;
  • - 60% less health;
  • - Cannot use any weapons except biotic powers;
  • - 20% slower movement speed;
  • - 70% less inventory space;

  • Drell; The drell are a reptile-like race that were rescued from their dying homeworld by thehanarfollowing first contact between the two. Since then, the drell have remained loyal to the hanar for their camaraderie and have fit comfortably into galactic civilization. Because the drell ancestors emerged from arid, rocky deserts the humid ocean-covered hanar homeworld of Kahje proved tolerable only when the drell stayed inside a climate-controlled dome city. Due to this huge disparity in the two species' homeworld environments the leading cause of death among drell on Kahje is a bacterial lung disease called Kepral's Syndrome. Within a generation of the drell's arrival on the planet the disease had become resistant to hanar antibiotics and other advanced treatments. Once an infection settles in, death is slow but imminent. Transplants may buy time, but as the infection spreads to other major organs there comes a point of diminishing returns and eventual system failure.
Gameplay features ans stats:
  • + Start with basic gun-handling skills;

  • - Colorblind;
  • - 20% less health;
  • - 10% less inventory space;
  • - Each 3rd drell has Kepral's syndrom - kind of a lung cancer. There is 1 to 3 probability of your character having this desease; If you do have it - you have to take special medicine at least once a day to keep yourself going. The disease also disables HP regeneration;

  • Vorcha; Known for their unique biology and aggressive behavior, the vorcha of Heshtok are a primitive race that live among the galaxy's darker and more dangerous locations, such asOmega. Many vorcha are trained by the krogan Blood Pack as mercenaries due to their savage nature and adaptability to different environments. The rest of galactic civilization regards them as pests and scavengers, and their presence is generally seen as a blight.
Gameplay features ans stats:
  • + 200% faster regeneration speed. You can regenerate 50% of your health in 50 seconds;
  • + 10% faster movement speed;
  • - 50% less health;
  • - 600% more damage taken from fire and explosions;
  • - 30% less inventory space;
  • - Unable to learn and use medical and technical skills due to low intelligence;

  • Quarian; The quarians are a nomadic species of humanoid aliens known for their skills with technology and synthetic intelligence. Since their homeworld Rannoch was conquered, the quarians live aboard the Migrant Fleet, a huge collection of starships that travel as a single fleet. Approximately three hundred years before the events of the Gamemode, the quarians created thegeth, a species of rudimentaryartificial intelligences, to serve as an efficient source of manual labor. However, when the geth gradually became sentient, the quarians became terrified of possible consequences and tried to destroy their creations. The geth won the resulting war and forced their creators into exile. Now the quarians wander the galaxy in a flotilla of salvaged ships, secondhand vessels, and recycled technology.
Gameplay features ans stats:
  • + Technic-related skills are maxed-out from the very beginning;
  • + Able to hack anything. From doors to mechs. If you have proper equipment, of course;

When you get an infection you must literally stuff yourself with antibiotics, or you are going to die in the next hour. The suit breach itself must be determined in the following ten minutes.
  • - Because of your specific genetic structure, you can only eat specialized Turian food.

  4. Your private container that can bee placed anywhere;
But wait! That's not it! You also get the ability to play as:

  • LOKI Mechs; The Hahne-Kedar-manufactured LOKI Mech is a bipedal humanoid security robot designed for security detail and guard duty in locations where manpower is an issue, or where the use of organics for "around the clock" shifts is unfeasible. Initially used exclusively by the Alliance for colony guard duty, the LOKI Mech came into new use following the Battle of the Citadel in 2183. Numerous civilian and military sector units saw staggering losses from Sovereign's attack and incidents involving the rogue SpectreSaren Arterius.

They are pack hunters when vulnerable prey is readily available and become scavengers when outnumbered or outclassed. Their supreme adaptability, vicious demeanor and rapid breeding cycle have made them ubiquitous and dangerous pests on many worlds. Virtually everywhere the krogan have been, varren infestations have followed, wreaking havoc with the native ecology.

TL:DR the gamemode was basically supposed to be a semi post-apoc thing on an isolated spess station but then FTRP got announced and I.. kinda sorta gave up.

a lot of work has to be put into MERP to make it interesting and continuously fresh, not many players take initiative or simply want to get titfuc from big blu alien :DD
It'd be pretty easy to keep things fresh at the start.

1) Allow ERP (Sounds off, but afaik 20% of the internet are ready to join just to get some of that sweet blue space dolphin pussy);
2) Make NPC and script respawn algorythms that ACTUALLY WORK.
3) Don't be an asshole and make a genuinely ok map with some interactive features.
4) Make faction war actually interesting and perhaps make the whole thing kinda like QZRP (not FTRP) with some sort of a safe zone which still has some sense of order in it, a-la Omega's central part and the surrounding slums. It may sound mildly cringy, but remember - we're talking about an isolated space station in the middle of nowhere, not a quarantined countryside. Perhaps have some kind of balance between the spirit of dangerous adventure and some safe locations for passive rp and cozy stories?

I'm Tommy Wiseau at this point. I'm terrible. I'm worthless.
