Looks like gas canisters you buy from the weapons store have a limited amount of fuel inside.
I tried going to the gas station to refill my canister there, but there does not appear to be an interaction possible.
Paying 800 dollars for the can should be enough in my opinion, and then refilling the same can as a recurring cost.
