Was DOOM 3 truly the first breakthrough in technology?

Throughout 1997 - 2000 video games were mostly only diffuse map and baked shaders until E3 2002 when real time specular lighting, bump mapping, shadows were introduced into the DOOM 3 game.

Now looking back, these graphics would be amazing even of todays standards, and it feels like a team of terminators who came from the future to create such game engine, and to release doom 3 in 2004.
