What is rp_shanghai27_v1?

shanghai27 is my own personal little pet map project set in shanghai, china, that's going to be created around the requests of nebulous, whether it be tips or wants from the users or direct requests from headstaff for the server's needs, i'm intending this to be as perfect as possible specifically for neb's environment.

the map is currently 0% complete. there's a lot to do at this stage and i'm feeling ready to do it all.

all i have is the idea for the location and theme, a rough draft of the layout and the motivation to get it done.

here's a concept for a "super mall"
the resturaunts dont have to be resturaunts that sell food, they can just be any sorts of shops
they'd be more expensive and have higher quality standards than the bottom stalls
3 floors not counting the bottom floor which has the stalls, 6 rooms in total overall.

i think this is a good idea but im scared it might end up being too cluttered or suck up all the rp from the rest of the map
give opinions pls

Even if there is just, let’s say, 6 in the megastore, there’s another 6 on the outside of the mall. That’s at the least, 12 different shops/markets/restraunts that can be open at once. Whilst realistic and cool as fuck, 12 potential shops would suck up the RP, and none of them would end up feeling as busy as they really should, since all of them would sport at most 2 or maybe 3 customers each

only real issue i see is with the excessive amount of stores

no real reason to have more than 5-6, coupled with the mall and extra stalls and restaraunts, its over-excessive, feel like it spreads the RP 'Hubs' out too much if u have too many

maybe merge a few of them in that complex in the center to have a few larger stores

also maybe swap UM and Apartment Block 1, upper area and the outer right/bottom street could be more union focused


If there is gonna be an outlands area ditch canals/sewers and instead opt for a more d4/rb6 area aboveground, if you have sewers/canals + outlands ull have a huge map and i17 syndrome where the population completely splits

Id switch the nexus/CAB area or make it further from the great wall, or id make sure they have absolutely no visibility over that area as it could just cause rebels stress/make them feel constantly under pressure by cops and scanners, they wont have much of an area to enjoy

from the image im getting the idea that the nexus/CAB area is sort of portruding through the great wall/built as an addition to it which would honestly look epic

other than that one more apt block unless you plan on having a lot of rooms in the other two would be nice, maybe a bit more distanced from the union area + the RB6 one, sort of like the chinese apt block we have now

streets being wide enough for an APC would also be a nice addition to cops since it seems like itd be fun to drive around, just be careful to not give it c24 syndrome with absolutely huge streets, just barely fitting the APC should do nice since the maps a sort of circle meaning it can go around easily

having catwalks/bridges and accessible rooftops would also be a welcome addition, but that depends on how tall you really wanna make them

otherwise i absolutely love the idea, i think assets are pretty much perfect for this, the mixture of the japanese assets from c24 + commie eastern europe/russian buildings from base game would be perfect for this setting

chinese palace for cab area or bust
i was planning on making the cab, cop and prossie area all in this one huge chinese temple, sorta like this:

where it'd have 4 or so floors, the middle would be ground level in which the "public" cab area would be with a podium for speeches and public meeting area and shit
then the top floor would be for private cab shit like internal affairs or whatever
and the two underground areas would be for cops and prossies and osi and shit

i'm somewhat considering making the outskirts less of "rebel area" and more of "combine dont care area" where it's not illegal to go there or anything but cops and overwatch dont really give a fuck about it, more of a run-down city type deal. no sewers i hate sewers. im getting so tired of sewers on every fuckin map looking dingy and boring.

as mentioned above i'm planning on the chinese palace temple idea but maybe i'll just make it for cab and prossies only and give cops and ota a different nexus for their own shit

i was planning on that with the great wall idea too, the great wall would be completely accessible with cops being able to walk across it with some catwalks connecting over the city sorta like how i17 did it

reworked map
toned down with how many stores and unused buildings there are.
cab shares their building with prossies, AB1 may or may not be loyalist housing depending on if people'd like that or not.
made it so most of the union buildings are immediately accessible and close together. terminal is next to the docks so they can get some pretty balconies that overlook the asian sea and scream obscenities at japan. CAB might get a cool balcony for themselves too
the unclaimed 'office building' could be for literally anyone, like a kobayashi-type mafia or whatever, da players decide.
got rid of outlands, instead now it's really cramped slums with tiny little buildings that could be for rebel bases or gang hideouts. the other building (the one literally labeled 'building'), idk yet i'll think of somethin.

across the map would be trams that the player could go inside, could hit upmost of 3 people and maybe 4 if one sucked in their gut. a quick way to travel across the map and could look cool. im trying to aim for a sorta futuristic city vibe mixed with depressing modern day slums without going too far on cyberpunk themes

I don't know if it's possible, but don't forget the skylines of Shanghai, there's a lot of towers, it's not akin to Kiev at all with how tall most the buildings are. It's something that gets neglected a lot in HL2RP maps, even the one we're on right now (I mean it's Tokyo, but it lacks the distinctive post-modern look the city has, a lot of concrete for a business center y'know?).

Not saying build a literal skyscraper you can enter, but it's something to consider for the skybox and textures friend.

side note: idk if you mean the great wall in a figurative sense, but the thing is 800 miles away from the city, unless the combine are just using their walls to extend it out, it'd be nowhere near the place

but maybe i've misinterpreted like a poopy head

i know, i just liked the great wall being turned into a combine wall idea so much. i'd say in lore they extended it or somethin
