to kick us off, let's look at one of the best modern directors out there - this is steve mcqueen's 2nd movie Shame, starring michael fassbender

let's talk about two sequences in this extraordinary movie (minor spoilers ahead)

plot: Successful and handsome New Yorker Brandon (Michael Fassbender) seems to live an ordinary life, but he hides a terrible secret behind his mask of normalcy: Brandon is a sex addict. His constant need for gratification numbs him to just about everything else. But, when Sissy (Carey Mulligan), Brandon's needy sister, unexpectedly blows into town, crashes at his apartment and invades his privacy, Brandon is finally forced to confront his addiction head-on.

in this scene, Fassbender is drawn to a woman on a subway. watch this fucking acting from the two of them, we are told an entire short story through zero words and 3 minutes of what a lesser movie would make into filler.

this scene is so minor and yet, taken by itself, is a complete synopsis of Brandon's character in the film

another video, this time it's a shot - a long tracking one (a fav technique of mine)

just look at that tracking, imagine the effort that went into that, the imagination and timing - it's absorbing and invites the audience to sink into escapism with Brandon as he literally runs from his problems

another thing that is interesting here is his lateral movement, in films if characters are shot going left to right then it is visually pleasing to audiences on a psychological level (we read the same way, but it also the same for other cultures) and we perceive it as 'progress' and 'moving on'

but here, Fassbender runs right to left, this is a devolution of his character, a regression into the past - symbolizing his inability to escape addiction and ultimately his unwillingness to let go

____

more to come soon, thread is a wip as always

Dialogue is fairly well written imo but the scenes are at some points dragged out to the point where you just lose interest. The movie itself though is defo not a "10/10" as some people would say but it is worth a watch if you find yourself without anything to do.
