Ioannes VIII Palaiologos, great Basileus of a weakened Eastern Roman Empire, met himself with his realm in precarious state. With the Ottoman Turk's threat at the door, he knew that he had to act fast. He sent the best Greek diplomats to the Principality of Wallachia, Kingdom of Immereti, the State of the Knight Hospitaliers, and secured a strong mutual alliance with a powerful fleet to deter the Ottoman from invading the remaining of Roman lands. He also improved relation with Principality of Albania. He did not ally with Albania, for he knew not to provoke the warmongering Turks. However, Ioannes VIII remained a good friend with Prince Skanderbeg. Ioannes also invested in a standing army, drilling them to become a professional one, waiting for any movement from the Turks.

Because of the galley fleet that could rivaled his own, the young Mehmed II turned his gaze to Lezhë, the remaining Albanian fort. Even though Albania was both guaranteed by Venetian Republic and Kingdom of Hungary, the distance was too great for the relief army to arrive in time. Confident in his ability, the ambitious sultan with his two armies, each 18000 men strong and led by the best Turkish generals, invaded Lezhë.

At this time, Constantine XI had succeeded his brother, taking charge of the Empire. Also a good friend of the Albanians, he could not sit idled as the Ottoman army ravaged the Balkan. While the two Turk armies, one fighting in Venetian land and the other being harassed around by the genius general Skanderbeg, the Roman Emperor with Legio I Byzantio, the 9000 finest and bravest sons of Rome, sortied from the city of the world's desire. The Ottoman capital Edirne (Also known as Adrianople) quickly fell by the Roman army. Constantine XI then crossed Bosphorus strait, as his 10 galleys coordinated with Venetian fleet to destroy 23 Turkish galleys. Now, with both the Bosphorus and Dardanelles secured, the Ottoman armies could not return back to Anatolia. The Roman Legion laid waste to Anatolia, destroying most of the infrastructures as they looted the riches from the Turks. Devastated and exhausted, and the Janissaries' morale had plummeted, Mehmed II had to seek a peace deal. Grateful for the Roman effort, Albania returned Epirus, Thessaly, Kastoria and Macedonia to the Empire.

Although most of former Roman lands were still in the hand of the Turks, a new page of history turned in front of the eyes of Constantine XI the Liberator. Defeating Mehmed II the Defeated was just a mere first step for the Palaiogolos family. The path to Renovatio Imperii, inherited from Justinian the Great, would be a long and painful struggle, but the Purple Phoenix would rise again, this time for eternity.
