Hey everyone, has anyone heard of the game "Amazing Frog?"?
Not many I imagine... or not anyone at all. But hey, that's normal, game's pretty underrated for what it is which is why, since I like writing long texts like I'm a savage writer, I'll explain or "review" what exactly this thing is.

What is Amazing Frog?
Amazing Frog is a sandboxy open world game developed by Fayju Studios, it's about a "superhero" frog that looks forward to help the city he's in and do other "heroic" acts. Originally released for the OUYA, and with currently more content on the OUYA, it was released on the PC since for the console, it didn't have that much success (not like it does now with the PC version), but it is said once it goes out of early access it'll have waaaaay more content than we can see at the moment.

The game takes place in the non-fictional place of Swindon, London, UK, and the focus on that specific place is making the developers try and replicate the town as accurately as possible. So if anyone lives in Swindon, or near it, bet you'd like to try this one out.

How exactly does this play?
Best I can describe the gameplay is "goofy".
The way the movement works is that it was purposely designed to be as clumsy looking as possible, you can't just walk over ledges without falling down or doing anything and not faceplant on the floor, literally any small action can make your frog fall down. While this might sound annoying, it is at first, but once you play enough it's a fairly fun feature.

Amazing physucks am I right?
But wait, there's more gameplay into the game than it might seem. It's not just running all over the place hitting your face into the first thing you see, the game has actual tasks!
They are all over Swindon, and completing the tasks rewards you with more customization options, suits/disguises and items for your frog, as well as letting you "unlock" more places and objects to use in the world of Swindon (which is pretty satisfying to be honest).
They are varied, and go from simply throwing trash in the trashcans, arresting criminals or rescuing kitties to taking corpses from a giant ant hive, fighting zombies to get a card to a secret base to doing time races.

There's two ways to get all these tasks, a half of them are around the world and you can find them by finding the right place, or waiting for the event to happen (such as would be the criminals, which you have to wait for them to appear on the map), the other half can be done with apps that you get on your phone and activate.

That's about it when it comes to gameplay, there's several features which are not yet completed, since the game is still early access, but pretty sure it'll get more amazing in the future.

Let's play dolls!; The customization:
The customization is Amazing Frog? is fairly limited but at the same time pretty extended... for now...
One one side, you can dress in any way possible, that if you found or unlocked cosmetics and suits, but it has the limitations that you cannot put on the clothes from suits you find, so you have to stick with plain colored shirts that have the same logos over and over.
But that doesn't mean you can't combine hats and accessories with the suits you find.

The way the suit finding works is that you look around the world of Swindon for hidden portable toilets which once you enter them, you'll eventually be thrown out with the suit that was inside the toilet. Weird concept, but hey, it's a weird game after all.

Multiplaying 101:

Heyyyy, check it out, Amazing Frog? has multiplayer!
Not the type of multiplayer where you play online with strangers, but rather a split screen multiplayer which goes up to four players... or less.
It's the basic concept that's been around for many years already, but Amazing Frog? gets much better when played with friends. Not only because the fun multiplies by being able to do stupid stuff together, but because the game is being thought out for many multiplayer opportunities, aside of coop. They've already implemented zones such as one map designed for deathmatch, with guns and such, another one based on racing, a platform-ish map to compete against the others, and so much more to come!
But is it really that impressive?
Well, for a game such as Amazing Frog?... I guess it is, I mean the game is already fun as it is and with the implementation of more stuff, it just gets better!

Amazing%2BFrog%2BPC.jpg

What kind of engine is this game using?
Sounds stupid, but it's Unity.
They used specifically Unity 4 for a good amount of time, and it seemed to work, it was until the very recent update; the f0.2.8c Frog Milk Coffee, in which they decided to go for the best and change to Unity 5, so graphics are "improved".

27858596165_a30eaa1636_b.jpg

And for being Unity, an engine known for being the core of shitty horror games like the slender clones, it works very well for Amazing Frog, in fact, if it was the Unreal Engine, I am willing to bet it wouldn't look properly cartoonish.

Am I not too old for this shit?
Bah, what does it matter for this game. Oddly it is as appealing for adults as it is for kids, now I'm not talking the game is meant to be made for one age or another, it's just a scramble between both things. On one side, it is kid friendly and goofy enough for children to enjoy, but it is also stupid and messy enough for adults to have a good laugh while playing with friends.
But what exactly makes this game so appealing for both?
It isn't exactly the fart jokes that are all around the game or anything, it's more of the implications of the game, on one side you got the tasks that you can waste your time completing, but on the other you got a game where you can do literally anything you wan't, and nothing will stop you. And just that quick transition makes it enjoyable for basically any game.
Don't expect me to answer if it'd be enjoyable for someone on his 70's.

The good and the bad:

amazing_frog1.jpg

Here we go to the part where good things and bad things come along to see how well things get balanced.
The Good.

-Completely open world sandbox game with the addition of tasks, which actually gives you something to do if you are bored of running around blowing stuff up and shooting civilian frogs. That type of things really check out.

-It's entertaining, and unlike other games of it's type, not for a few minutes, but rather for hours. I can perfectly tell by all the hours I wasted playing with my brother, we just can never have enough to do.

-The focus on the split screen multiplayer is well deserved, for a game that's best enjoyed with two or more people playing. It's just the fact that they do multiple gamemodes to keep game scrambled with ideas so well it needs to be classified as a good thing.

-Wonky 'n' wobbly physics are easily one of the funniest aspects of the game, they aren't exactly the most advanced piece of physical engineering in a game, but it has something that just makes observing it fantastic.

-Apps that you can find in places expand the fun a lot, hell, even finding the apps are a fun activity on itself!

The bad.

-A problem with level transition which is actually sort of horrible, if you go through a door that leads to another level with something on your hands or holstered, it'll dissapear once the level loads. I just wish I could take guns with me inside loading screen buildings so I can shoot some stuff, or just bring random trash with me to places as such.

-Shooting a gun in the game can sometimes be hell, the weapon either collides with a wall and makes you drop it as well as ragdoll you, or you shoot and sometimes it ragdolls you. There's also something bad which is when a frog runs towards you and hits you, you completely drop the weapon, letting the other frog pick the weapon and shoot you instead.

-The feature of being clumsy as well can get really annoying on many occasions, especially on platforming places where precision is needed. If you sprint for about 5 seconds, you'll fart and ragdoll, making you fall into pits and other places.

-The whole map on itself, besides Swindon, is actually HUGE, and the problem is that there's way too much open space with nothing but grass and some hills. And it makes the game feel seriously empty, which makes driving around really boring. But devs have said those places will be filled with more locations, so it's all about waiting.

Conclusion, is it recommended?

image-05-700x410.jpg

Personally speaking: Hell yeah!
You definitely should buy this if sandboxing and open world split screen fun is your thing.
You can't get dissapointed by this unless you really try, but that doesn't mean the game will be perfect. Expect it's flaws to show up as well since to begin with, you'll be thrown inside the game having no idea where to go or what you are supposed to do, but don't let that stop you neither!
The price however might seem just a tiny bit big... just a really tiny bit.

TL;DR
It's a fantastic Sandbox Open World game about frogs farting and being superheroes, I really recommend it if anyone likes split screen action and silly games.
