I don't know why, but we wanted a Chinese city map.

We had the permission from a russian mapper to edit his version, and after having had a deep discussion with him after several failed compiles (Crashes, corrupted materials, sounds and lighting) revealed that it took him several days to bug fix and even compile that custom map with 2 CUSTOM compilers (Hammer++? nah fuck that, didnt have enough capacity for the lighting and vertices), 1. for forcefully bypassing hammer limits like vertices, light entities and other stuff because it was horribly unoptimized, the second I forgot what it was for.

Even after using said custom compilers and programs, upon loading into the map, several lighting areas were still broken, some custom props like this fucking plastic chair just straight up crashed your game.

After all the bug fixing I've done, I then had been greeted by all the custom materials just going up in flames and completely self destructing their material path, they still existed, but I had to re-assign ALL the materials on the map that they were applied on, but even after that, their specular materials were also fucked apart.
This map is one of the biggest reasons why I have such hate and vitriol against the fucking Hammer engine, not even Hammer++ could unfuck this shitfest of a map.

P.s.: I also had the russian mapper accompany me almost all the way through this process, and even he was completely bewildered and told me stories of him facing other, similarily fucked up things with this map. But he got lucky and actually managed to get one compile done, but this was his version and not fitting for our server setting.

There was this one event during the first Helix iteration that I hope somebody can recount in greater detail, because all I think I remember is that the uhh
-Event was called Wakizashi (or some other name for a Japanese sword)
-It was set in the Yalu River area, which is the border between Korea and China
-Players attending the event were working for Zaibatsu/Kobayashi
-It took place after Korean Chaebol were defeated and Z/K were expanding their domain (anybody caught making JJK references will be beaten senseless by every able-bodied member of the community) from the recently-conquered Korea to China
-Map was snowy (I think?) and it was sort of trench warfare (I think?)

Honestly my mind kinda ravels when I try to remember any actual contents of the event, but the premise alone always stuck in my mind to some greater degree.

Sitting in bed right now telling my girlfriend about nebulous for some reason as a random conversation and came back on the forum,

Really missing this stupid roleplay shit, I will admit I joined this server when I was like 13-14, and I'm only now 17 going on 18. Leaving to the Marines come next July, already swore in and signed everything. Even got MoS to be as Military Combat Camera.

Growing up really makes me miss rushing home to get on my school laptop I played on to play as some dumbass character I made up as a kid, anywhere from my first character, Wallace Lampp who I genuinely cried when he died, to Thomas Brookes and his war against Lambda as my final story on here.

And anywhere in between, like The Giant and his Chinese Triad affairs, his Red Lantern Fight Club, or even the Chisai Clan and the attempted Yakuza comeback. And even Shang Jiang and my first foray into Asian characters. (I know I had a weird obsession with Asian cultures and characters and stuff but that all kinda spawned from my big brother making me fall in love with Samurai and Kurosawa).

Looking back on every iteration I played, you guys probably saw more of my interests than anyone I knew physically, and so I still got a lot of love for neb, I wish it'd return and roleplay would be like what it used to be, but I think I was in the last generation of kids playing this shit, and now all our times passed.

I got so giddy telling my girlfriend about a GMod roleplay and she was so interested in it too, but I did get a bit sad talking about it in the past tense. My heart gets kinda torn up treating this stupid game like a friend who passed away.

I'm rambling, but I'm really gonna miss it.

Also, another thing, this dumb roleplay stuff I did as a kid helped me so much with my dreams of becoming an author and a film maker. I used to mess around on the street with bad kids and even the Latin Kings, and almost got tied into gang culture.

But roleplaying and wanting to be a kid staying inside and playing video games kept me outta all that.

After my service with the Marines I'm going to NYU for film.

It's weird having to thank a roleplay community for helping me get to this point.

literally went through the same thing, i kinda brought it up in references in conversation from time to time with my fiance, but the penny dropped as to how far it went when i had steam open and she saw like 3.5k hours in gmod and was just like "wtf" so i spent like 30-40 minutes loredumping her, funny thinking that most of us are probably gonna live that experience at some point lol

map wasnt snowy and im pretty sure this was the event where the Kobayashi were attacking an E.L.A @fuckyourstupidnameitmakesitsohardtotag was secretly working for the E.L.A and gunned down most of the other event participants i remember watching on in observer and thinking holy shit thank god @GenericPlayer denied me from the event

ayo

so what happened was the kobayashi were drafting foreigners to throw at the ELA (chinese, korean & russian) forces during the invasion of manchuria. ELA forces kind of distrusted each other since they were 3 nationalities fighting to keep the kobayashi out in real meatgrinder situations. trench warfare on a ludicrous scale, thousands dead each hour.

my character wanted to link up with the ELA again to find out where Engel Haas disappeared to (he was a founding member of the ELA-BAF 'merger') so he used an old fake ID to get pressed into service, with him was some other character (who was played by someone I forgot) we'll call bob - some ex-union scientist, @cns - he/him/his's asian captain ex-conscript, and two other guys.

they got thrown in with crude weapons and after the wave before them charged the ELA lines (only to die in the shelling and hit by machinegun emplacements) the four of us went over the top. I pulled back, aimed my gun at the guys in front while hiding in a shellhole and hesitated on shooting them - at first I was simply going to look and wait until they either deserted or died, but Bob ended up striking a conversation about how he wanted an out of this hellscape, so we just decided to have the two of us openly shoot the others, give them a chance to fight us openly and stop us if they could.

cns got shot in the head and I forget if we killed the other guy or he got offed by the event characters. after the kobayashi wave were wiped out, we surrendered and found ourselves interrogated for half an hour before being moved on to beijing.

bob later died of cancer while he was the guest of the ELA months later, something about how he came to manchuria to die in the first place, my mind's pretty blank regarding most of his motivations. my character found Haas and pretty much ceased to be a server presence by then, more content to exile himself away from an insurgency that had long forgotten most of his veteran ilk.

also the map did have snow, it even had snowfall while most of it was barren dirt - I remember that distinctly.

e: went looking for the event convo and while I couldn't find it, I did find this image rp document I made up for some @sots event that came ages after and I wasn't picked for. @slick and @sots shout out for the chaos of the mojave event, flip of a coin and I wouldn't have had the character. still feel bad for how you guys took that gamble, refused the seat and went back to the camp only for everyone to flip out homicidal while me and @john got a free flight out.

I did give them a good chance, keep that in mind.

only started blasting when they made it clear they were committed to the Kobayashi despite standing in the literal guts of the last 20-ish men sent by them in the last wave.
