Description: Add a Compass item to the Hardware store so we can have the GPS Minimap on foot when not inside a vehicle.

image.png

Why it would be worth adding: Helps navigation on foot.

Requirements: Development work.

I don’t think it should add a GPS at all, but maybe just an actual compass at the top of your screen or in the corner showing you what direction you’re headed.

There could be an enhanced one that might show the street name you’re on, but I am opposed to the idea of having a full GPS on your screen.

no i'd like the gps please

my phone has a map, and i don't need to stand still to look at it

it's just needlessly unintuitive to make on-foot players have to keep pausing to know if they need to make a turning or not

this is honestly like my biggest gripe rn, everything else in the server flows smooth as butter with diegetic buttons but you cant justify people having a GPS on their person?

hell i wouldnt mind making it an app on the phone so that when you're actively in that app, you have the GPS

that way at least you can showcase to others that you're looking at a map, without abruptly coming to a dead-stop while walking

literally call it the GPS app, and when you enter the app, you get the minimap enabled
you have to be actively in the app for the minimap to remain, so putting your phone away hides it

then you can get a jog at the very least, instead of stopping constantly

or yknow, committing crimes solely so you can see where the fuck you're going (hotwiring a car)

the fact that you can run around with your phone out makes me err on the side of "please no" when it comes to a gps on the phone.

knowledge of the map comes with time, i don't think people this early on need to have 100% constant awareness of their exact position at all times. there should be some confusion on where things are, there should be incentivization to learn where things are and where you are going. not knowing where you are at is purely an IC problem, not really an OOC one. allow yourself to struggle a little bit in a new environment.

literally just give it time and you will eventually know where you are at and you won't need a GPS to get around.

you're literally just gatekeeping lmao

let people have a GPS, this isn't dark souls, we don't need to put a skill gap on knowing the map, especially when ICly barely any of the player characters are from Los Santos (almost everyone refers to NPCs as "locals")

asking people to learn about the city they're moving into and not relying on a gps being in the corner of your screen at all times isn't gatekeeping, you're being ridiculous. it genuinely doesn't take that much time to learn where things are and learn the streets when you're putting the effort in to learn, landmarks genuinely make this so easy.

i find it weird that you outright oppose any notion of an optional /emote command because it breaks your immersion but you want a gps in your face all the time and suddenly don't care about the immersion. most people are generally incapable of sprinting down the street while holding their phone right in front of their face, they'd just be running into shit.

taking the gps away from being visible isn't me asking for this to be dark souls lmao, but if it helps bro even the description for the server says "serious roleplay experience".

also everyone is saying locals simply because it's WEIRD to say NPCs. it's just something to get around the weirdness. some people certainly do roleplay themselves as being from los santos lmao.

a gps in my face is immersive, i do in fact walk around with google maps on my phone when I'm in town.

right in front of your eyes like google glasses while you're full sprint running down the streets? doubt.

walking slowly looking down from time to time not having almost perfect 360 degree vision of your surroundings? sure, I'd get that. and you know how to do that in rp? stopping and hitting esc to look at the map there. if you need a gps in your face at all times in a place you live there's a whole issue there.

i'd be much more amenable to a physical map that you had to hold in front of your face and walk at best. no running. can't really see shit besides what's on the sides of the map. like you're holding an actual paper map. but this always-visible-always running around-always-having-perfect-locational-awareness-at-every-microsecond GPS shit is goofy as fuck. there should be room for people to have to struggle around learning unfamiliar places, routes, etc, there should be room for bad comms and confusion. having a gps in your fucking hands while running on foot from the cops and giving comms to your buddies on radio is GOOFY.

if you need things spoonfed to you all the time like, i get it, that can be a vibe sometime, but i don't think it should be happening here.

I don’t get why ur so hyper hung up on gritty levels of realism for what is essentially people asking for the ability to walk and look at the minimap

this is the game that lets you get into a car, lock the car, then get out of the locked car, and then be locked out
the game that lets you teleport at will by just reconnecting
the game that lets you survive 50 gunshots to the head so long as a doctor bandages you 5 times
the game that gives you a fine for 1st degree murder

its just a minimap for on-foot use dude.

just learn the city instead of constantly relying on having a gps in the corner of your eyes dude

minimap on foot is AIDS and just takes immersion away.

Nobody would be forcing you to use the Compass man. That's why it'd be an optional buy in the Hardware store and wouldn't be something you have from the get go.

i don't think a gps should be in the corner of anyone's screen period.

an actual compass yes. all that N-S-E-W-NW-SW-NE-SE goodness. a more expensive one that can add just a street name is palatable, even. a handheld (can't radio, can't be on/use your phone, no gun or other object in hand), vision eating (see just the very edges of your screen at best), force-walking-no-running map is fair.

a straight up gps no. especially when there's literally zero drawback and breaks immersion the way it does. and once you start treading into "well you don't have to use it" you're basically telling people they're gonna have to use it to have the upper hand when in war or getting into shit with the cops. i think you should have to be relying on actual map knowledge in this shit, not rely on pinpoint visual gps.

if you want gps get in the car lol. or just take the second to hit escape and look i guess. but it has no place being there on the hud. that's some gta online shit. it really is.

learn to navigate, please. learn landmarks. i'm getting the vibe some people aren't even trying to learn their surroundings and just expect it to be spoonfed instead.

Nobody would be forcing you
funny cause i had this same take about an emote command but apparently merely having the option of a typed command was more than enough to break max's own immersion, funny how that works :^)

Guess all we can do is wait and see what the Development Team makes of this suggestion.

you can press escape to see the map while on foot.

I really don't like seeing the gps all the time, I think it's perfect the way it is

I play the server to roleplay, not to prepare for GTA V Geoguessr.
you can press escape to see the map while on foot.
Yeah you can, and from what I've seen this has just resulted in people running for 5 minutes, stopping to check the map and then running again, people are still relying on the GPS to get around its just a matter of whether you'd want it to be more accessible or not

I want to argue that it's fine like it is, I understand that you come from a fivem server with the gps on foot or perhaps GTA:O but really, the way it is currently on the server is a lot better for the way the server is built. You learn the map rather quickly and realistically you don't have a map in the corner of your eye IRL. Pressing esc to look at the gps is akin to looking at the map on your phone.

Let's put it this way, it's normal to get lost and look at your map, but you don't live life with a map in the corner of your eye.

Please keep it the way it is, I know the vocal minority is strong but most people are happy with the way it is. You'll get used to it with time. I think it's a huge detriment to have it changed and you will have suggestions begging for it to be the way that it was if it does change.

me when I'm in some random fucking suburb and can't see any landmarks
gandalf-i-have-no-memory-of-this-place.gif

I'm 100% completely for ease of access and quality of life shit. I can hit escape at literally any moment and see the entire map despite the fact I ain't carrying around a fuckin paper map in my ass and there's no GPS app currently on my phone. Likewise, I don't think a reliant robin has in-built GPS too so the fact I'm able to get the HUD while driving it makes me think this isn't a realism argument but just stupidity.

IRL even though I've spent years living in my town and I know where buildings are and I can see them from miles away, doesn't mean I can fuckin orienteer myself around based on them specifically. Streets twist and turn, have dead ends, one way streets, etc etc etc. I gotta go somewhere that I've not been to a hundred times? I'm pulling out google maps on my phone and I'm looking at it virtually every two minutes. I'm walking, with my phone out in front of me looking at it, and I'm not putting my phone away every ten seconds.

Also, as others have said - don't want it? Don't use the app on your phone or buy the item but please for the love of god especially now while most of us are on foot, this would be far more convenient.
