basically a better way to manage different minecraft versions
eg this my multimc:

it allows me to easily download, install and play different versions of minecraft and modpacks. Basically it makes life easier as the default launcher is primarily for vanilla.

in regards to fixing the default launcher i cant help you with that, sorry
