There was a moment in time when Shell Beach was opened for citizens for a few weeks, not sure if these were the pics relating to it.

I really miss the wildest moments and chaos in i17, it's hard to replicate it now

i still remember when rp_c18 was the gold standard of most hl2rp servers, sometimes c45

then this fucking crown jewel came along with its custom assets and consistent artstyle and everyone lost their minds

i remember around that time as a kid i'd noclip around hl2rp maps to figure out every inch of them & imagine scenarios playing out in specific shops, locations, alleways etc. and when i tried doing that in i17 i was instantly overwhelmed by its scale and complexity

fast forward to 2023 and

I could probably navigate it with my eyes closed

Even with my deep-seated loathing for the Half-Life 2 beta and those who enshrine it above release HL2, I still carry a great deal of respect for i17 as a map that has consistently been host to many fond memories over the years.

Crazy to think 2013 was ten years ago. I feel fucking old.

Do you hate the HL2 Beta or the fanboys who cudgeled it to death like an equine?

Mostly the latter, but even when it comes to the former there are a few concepts that I cannot help but roll my eyes a bit.

It’s not all rotten tho

The only truly great parts of the actual beta were the concept art and the far more desolate take on the wastelands that we would've seen in the intro.

I would've loved to see the beta wastelands. The coast do an alright job with the drained oceans and shit but seeing more would've been rlly nice.

Tbh the Beta itself was split into like 4 different design concepts across 3 years and hundreds of different test maps and one-off concepts anyway.

There comes a time when you have to ask yourself if God will forgive us for wasting his gift of life?

perhaps have we wasted our time, but we have created valuable times for others unknowingly, so i call my time a success

song that plays when you used to walk into the ration centre a mere 30 mins after a mass-shotcop with your SPAS-12 and xbow stashed in your inventory (a travel pack and max str 60kg storage), your 140 armour 40% prot battle suit ready to instaequip in the event of smoke.

yknow

in my mind I mostly remember and associate I17 with rich on rp and population type of experience, high density and much chatter and human life around,
less about pvp
that's at least what is left in my mind and imagination about i17 past

It had the perfect layout I think. From where you start, there is both a linear progression from most combine controlled to least, while at the same time always having a route back where you came from other than your original path, which made it feel a lot less linear than it was. The loop of the city combined with that progression really just made the city breathe.

Yeah, compared it to maps that are either comprised of deeply separated areas, straight lines or dead ends, i17 is extremely porous and its flow is probably the most of why it remains successful.

I also think, to return to previous points, that the Half-Life 2 Beta craze throughout HL2RP is in part a result of i17’s success.
