The Enterprise's red alert system was blaring it's shrill, continuous wail throughout the violently shaking ship. Many crewmen struggled to maintain their balance to maintain their posts as the over half-kilometer vessel was flung between dimensions like a ragdoll. On the bridge of the Enterprise, Captain Picard kept his composure as usual, this wasn't to say that he was not experiencing fear at this moment. Probably the only one who could really say that would be Commander Data, but the Captain has been through far worse, and so he steeled his mind and concentrated on coordinating the ship to have the best chance of survival during this emergency.
"Ensign Gates, Report!"
The female flight controller seemed frantic, she was tapping away at the console faster than she had ever in her life, trying desperately to wrest control of the ship from the sudden wormhole that had appeared, though she knew that from the sheer size of this dimensional aperture that it was in vain.
"Captain! Sensors are erratic but it looks like at least a class four wormh- AAAAGH!!!" The ensign's answer was cut short as an EPS relay overloaded and caused the entire console to explode, the shockwave sending her barreling backwards against a nearby wall, the impact against the bulkhead snapping her neck, ending her life almost instantly.
Merde. Thought the captain, he proceeded to not so tap, but more like nearly bash his combadge, opening a communications link to engineering, he barked "Bridge to Engineering, Commander La Forge report your status!"
...
Data and La Forge were furiously tapping away at various consoles, despite the warp core's coolant systems and backup coolant systems operating at maximum capability, the core's pressure levels were somehow reaching dangerous ratings. Commander Data in particular was moving so quickly that one could hardly distinguish his hands from an ancient 20th century propeller. They managed to vent a significant chunk of their warp plasma into space, giving them enough time to prevent an all-out warp breach, which would have undoubtedly annihilated the entire ship. The rest of engineering was similarly frenzied, engineers both young and seasoned were racing throughout the room, one of the consoles had already overloaded, resulting in three crewmen being critically injured. Their colleagues, well trained in first aid were able to stabilize them, but they would need to be taken to sickbay as quickly as possible. Through the cacophany of yelling, rumbling, and of course the shrill wail of the klaxons, Captain Picard's voice somehow made itself clear through the communication system.
"Bridge to Engineering, Commander La Forge report your status!"
Geordi immediately responded to the captain's order, replying "Captain, the warp core is nearing critical pressure! We've managed to delay a breach by venting warp plasma but we've only got maybe three minutes tops before a warp core breach!" Before Captain picard could reply, all of the Enterprise's power systems seemingly shut down save for emergency power reserved for engineering, and at the same time the shaking suddenly stopped. After a few seconds, the power came back online, and the Warp core similarly seemed to calm down as well.
"Commander La Forge, what just happened?"
Geordi seemed dumbstruck, the warp core was operating fine one minute, going insane the next, and then calm again minutes later. The only possible explanation could be that it was somehow tied to the anomaly that caused the entire ship to shake violently. He regained his senses and replied to the Captain "I'm not sure captain, it seemed as soon as we fired up the new warp core the ship started quaking and the core was about to breach, then it all just stopped. Core temperature and pressures are at nominal levels, but we have three people in critical condition with plasma burns from an EPS overload. The ship's structural integrity has been weakened but still remains at 90%, should be good enough until we undergo repairs, Captain."
"Acknowledged, all senior staff report to the ready room, Picard out."
