BRUH

you put down farmlands in the build menu, click it, and then tell them what crops you want to plant at what season

go to your cooking menu and disable "make meals out of plump helmets"
I got told I was supposed to grow stuff underground, hence why in my current fort I'm actively attempting to seal the map boundaries to the cavern and clearing huge swathes of space for agriculture

yeah, like 1-2 layers underground
where there's still dirt

you can find soil in caverns, but "just below the surface" farms work great until then

my farming set up is:

3x3 plump helmets all year around

3x3 pig tails when available, plump helmets when not

3x3 cave wheat when available, plump helmets when not

remember to forbid brewing pig tails, and you've got your clothing industry, drink and sustainable food!

also having farming only be done by 1 person makes it pretty slow in the early game, but by a few years he'll get triple the yield from each harvest

I habitually tunnel 10 levels (or to the nearest whole two digit number ending in 0) down before I dig out for stuff. Idk, it makes me feel safer.

Also keep in mind some biomes don't have dirt or have very little dirt/soil so what you can do is, if there is a river you can create a cavern of where you want to farm, then leave a block open to open later when the water comes in. Near that hole build kind of an airlock with a floodgate so that the water can pass through and then be blocked. Make a hole or a way down so that the water can drain then close the floodgate. And them boom you have mud which you can use to plant.

Bit rudimentary and I'm sure there are better ways but it worked for me.

(P.S. To avoid dwarf drowning, do a slope from the surface down to the hole so you can safely open it up there, or waterpumps!)

So in my latest fort, I got a mist generator running and I literally don't have a single upset person, it's wackily good.

As for farming, I drained a murky pool, turned it into mud then put a house ontop of it and made it into farms, but despite the fact it's beneath the ground level and has a house ontop of it, apparently I can only grow above-ground crops, so I've dug down into the cavern layer and there's an aquifer there:

If I remove the free-standing areas of damp stone, will I remove the aquifer from there, or will I still end up with water? Moreover, will an aquifer in the cavern layer that isn't sealed slowly fill the entire fucking cavern?

iirc smoothing walls that are aquified will stop them leaking
failing that you can just put some grated flooring in and let the water drain to a nearby ravine

Shit if that works that'd have saved me a lot of time when digging down, but in this case I want to remove them to make large areas for farming and they're kind of in the way.

Yeah cause with aquifiers what I do is a 3x3 staircase and smoothing down the walls quickly, alternatively you can also do a 2x2 staircase and build walls around it quickly as long as water is less than 4 it allows you to build on it.

Now heavy aquifiers good luck those are very hard to deal with

Okay, but in this case with me wanting to outright remove the damp pillars, will they just spawn water in the empty space or does the water come from the nearby wet stone?

In other news, the yearly caravan this run is constantly trying to rip me off, how can I make them have an 'accident' so I get a different trader who won't demand 1k profit

afaik if you break a damp stone and water starts flowing it will just keep spawning till eventually, it fills the whole cave so what you can do is either re-direct the flow of water into a grate to a ravine or if you want to be brave, pump it to the surface.

I honestly don't know if by removing the pillar completely it would stop, that said what I do is I just keep digging till I'm out of the aquifer layer or find a cave with no or very low aquifiers

I've yet to encounter a 'ravine' so I'm unsure what you entirely mean, but I guess I'll just leave it alone for now. I'd already passed the aquifer layer on the way down but I guess my world has two lmao

i vote for capturing a deadly monstrosity, locking it behind a wall and unleashing it on them when they arrive

if all else fails, atom smash. atom smash. atom smash.

I'm back again to plea for help because the squad armour menu is the most tedious thing in the world.

so, my issue. I've been trying to get my soldier dwarves kitted, and for some reason they keep having issues wearing the armour I tell them to wear, processing it as just not existing apparently. I figured it was due to the fact they were in stockpile boxes, so I removed them from there and then left them just on the floor in a stockpile. That didn't help either, so I removed the stockpile so there was nowhere for the items to go and that helped but didn't solve my issue entirely. I then did some wiki diving and found out that if you set your dwarves armour to "worn over clothes" then sometimes other shit might get in the way if the slot is taken by their clothes, so I've set it to replace instead, but now I'm conscious that the only thing my dwarves will be wearing is armour and *nothing else* so I started trying to look into clothing and what takes up what slot and so on, but it hasn't been very helpful, so all I want to know is: WHAT THE HELL DO I SET MY PEOPLE TO WEAR

Armor.png

THIS is my current usual loadout, with the melee weapon swapped for the type and the shield not used for the crossbow dwarves. Metal efficiency and all that shit aside, is this fine for a dwarf to wear, should I include other clothing if it's going to completely replace their clothing? Like should I give them socks for their boots, or...?
