i thought they banned guns in your country

No, not entirely. There is a lot of convoluted rules and regulations. I'll explain it for yourself and the benefit of others.

Here is an image that gives your a rough idea of what the UK has to put up with:

All of these require a valid reason for possession of firearms. That does not include with the intent of use for self-defense. if you use a firearm as self-defense in the UK, you will get convicted and most likely get more jail time than the person who was a threat to your life. To note it has been illegal since 1937 when they introduced the "1937 Firearms Act" to purchase and use firearms for self-defense. A valid reason to have a firearm is for work related purposes which more often not involves the removing of animals that are dangerous. Another reason which is the most common one; with the intent to use for sport related reasons, such as clay shooting. There is other reasons but they're too niche and won't allow the common people to have one.

If you're lucky enough for the Police to decide your 'mentally fit' to have in possession of a firearm you will have to store it in your house and tell no one where you keep it. More often than not the place the Police allow you to store it is highly unpractical and makes it awkward to have and use it; also the ammo must be separate from where you store the firearm. The real icing on the cake is at any moment the police can take your firearm and all of your ammo without any reason, and you're not allowed to complain.

However in despite of all that, you can have a wide arrange of other types of offensive weapons -- but as I said earlier if you use it in self-defense you will be convicted and face jail time, which will be more than the person you used it against. This website details what you can obtain legally: http://www.ukpreppersguide.co.uk/legal-weapons-for-preppers-in-the-uk/

This website is pretty good and shows you what lengths you must go to have firearms: http://www.marplerifleandpistolclub.org.uk/general/gunlaw.htm

If you want a general idea of what offensive weapons you can purchase without a license other than proof your eighteen or older, this website does the trick: https://www.bladesandbows.co.uk/

If you were able to use offensive weapons for self-defense, a good get up would be a sword and a crossbow. Which you can purchase without the need of applying, and only need to be eighteen or older. Bearing in mind the sword fits the UKs classification on what is illegal or not for a sword. This website shows what is permitted or not: http://www.blades-uk.com/faqs.php

This is concise as I could put it without going into detail all the rules and regulations there are. I hope this opened your eyes to what is permitted or not in the UK.
