The reign of Ophelia II was marked as a time of financial and political reform within the North Sea Kingdom and its colonies; clearing Denmark of its historic debts, limiting the influence of the Danish merchant classes and founding legislative houses for the elites in København, Oslo and Edinborg (the administrative capital of the Western Isles). These houses, although not functioning parliaments, were granted the status as Realm Folketing - able to create limited legislation for the sovereign to approve or deny.
The status of the Danish Baltic was settled in 1630 when the troublesome province was granted semi-autonomous status as the Duchy of Estonia, ruled by the Swedish noble family of Aminoff, loyal servants to the Danish crown since the Act of Union.
The Earldom of Ulster would see its lands expanded in a punitive war against the rump English kingdom - ceding further territory to the puppet O'Reillys. Unable to control the religious tension between the ruling Protestants and Catholic majority, a decades long conflict broke out across the vassal state. Ireland would continue to be a thorn in Denmark's side in an increasingly peaceful European theatre, drawing colonial forces and ships back to the home region for peacekeeping and counter-rebellion campaigns.
In the year 1637, Snæfellsjökull - a volcano on the western edge of Iceland - unexpectedly erupted. The resulting fires and ash storm would destroy the citadel at Lóndrangar, led to a five year famine, crippling Iceland's population and wealth. Ophelia II was killed during the catastrophe - an event that would turn the Danish court away from the growing fetishisation of Icelandic culture.

The Young Prince, Fredrick I, was crowned before his education could be completed. Surrounded by a wise court of councillors built up by Ophelia II, Fredrick was able to push for an aggressive expansion of Vinlandic territory - into the lands of the Sioux and south into the rich provinces of Ontario. The war, known as the Desolation of the Siouxland, was a horrific three year conflict which saw Danish forces burn and loot their way through the tribal territories until they were vastly outnumbered and defeated at the Battle of Huron.
After the Army of Vinland was strengthened by forces from Norway, the Sioux were defeated and their lands were incorporated into the rapidly expanding colony. Following this victory, the Vinlandic Folketing demanded greater powers - control over the fur trade, control over its own expansion, the power of war and peace. Fredrick made the unprecedented decision to be the first European monarch to visit the New World, meeting with the Folketing in Christianfjord in 1640 to negotiate a settlement. In the end, only modest concessions were made - and Danish supremacy remained secure.
On the continent, Fredrick waged a final war of conquest for the remaining lands of England and Ireland - splitting them with the French and Dutch Republic. The English Tudor king was exiled to the Isle of Man, the last province that could be called 'England'. With this victory, Fredrick was hailed as 'Fredrick the Conqueror' at a ceremony held in the Dutch-held city of York (Jorvik). While most dismissed the ceremony as purely symbolic in nature, a deal had been done to ensure that English Brazil became Danish territory - as Denmark had declared itself the heir to England's remaining lands and titles. During the war, the Danish had already colonised three Caribbean islands, in secret preparation for their expanded interest in the New World...
Fredrick would not live to see the consequences of his actions however. On the journey back to København, Fredrick succumbed to a wound from an English arrow that had grown infected over the weeks since victory. He died in 1646.

The brother of the Young Prince Fredrick, Adolf I began his reign as a popular reformist monarch - granting religious freedoms to Ulster and Estonia, who chose to restore their Catholic faith, now one of the handful of Catholic territories in the world. He also proved to be an innovator; building universities in København and Edinborg in 1648 and shipyards across the Free Cities and Jutland.
However, his reputation as a peaceful reformer would be short-lived. In 1657 the Scottish lords rebelled against Danish rule. The War of Scottish Independence was ended by swift military action - and a brutal military occupation of the Western Isles began. Over time, further power would be granted to the Gaelic speaking Highlanders and Island lords, as they were historically more loyal than their lowland counterparts.
In the same year, the Danes settled the far reaches of the South Atlantic - Folkland and South Gotland island, shortly to be followed by a colonial mission to La Plata. The continued violation of the 15th century treaties that broadly outlined the New World drew Denmark into a prolonged diplomatic dispute with the Portuguese Empire, who claimed dominion over the entirety of South and Central America.
These bold moves in South America were opportunistic at their core - Portugal, engaged in decades of struggle in Mexica, leaned on the same powers as Denmark, the Ligue de Paris, and any disagreement would need to be settled with diplomacy first, rather than a military response. In 1667, the now-defunct Holy Roman Empire was disbanded by the French Emperor, now the triumphant and ultimate military power of all Europe, perhaps the world.
The dispute with Portugal would be ongoing - but overtures have been made, by the 1670s, to the Portuguese sovereign; Denmark will cease all Brazillian coastal expansion, will confine itself to the Amazonia interior, and limit its expansion in south La Plata, ultimately looking to control the Cape of Good Hope and south Pacific. In this vein, Adolf I decreed himself as Protector of the North and South, intent on expanding his realm further before the European powers reach the zenith of their conquest.
It was this desire that would ultimately plunge his kingdom into a crisis. In 1670, a coalition of European forces intervened in the Indian subcontinent to contain the aggression of the princely states. What began as a mission to "restore the balance power between India and China" quickly became a mad rush for land and influence in the post-war peace. Denmark was no exception and used its string of trading ports in the South Atlantic, South Africa and the Indian Ocean to deliver a comparatively small force to assist in the intervention. This costly mission would yield much for the Ming Emperor and the Great Stadtholder of the Netherlands, who no doubt envisioned a large Dutch presence across India. However, Denmark was neglected in the settlement and the treaty port selected 50 years ago by the Hudson Bay Trading Company, was not incorporated into the Danish Realm. The Netherlands provided a vast sum in compensation to the Danish Crown for the blood and treasure spent, but the incident served to remind Adolf of his own kingdom's growing irrelevance in international power games between world superpowers.
As he 17th century draws to its close, great power blocks are forming. Denmark sits between them; between France and Russia, between the Dutch and the Ottomans and China. All world powers looking to challenge and undermine one another. A war is coming - a war between the great powers, a world war.
