but then he went to a convention with them and figured out how fucked in the mind they are.

Basically, they went to a restaurant and some fag with a cat persona or w/e its called played with the fucking hanging lights like its a ball of cotton. With a bunch of people looking at him.
at this point, he just left that group and never spoke with them again

also its reputation isn't that bad, especially in the states with ever growing convention sizes, all over the country. there's even a group of furballs that do nature walks and cookouts in my county back home. zootopia, which was quite literally a nod to the furry fandom, straight up shoved an already well known internet sub-culture right into the spotlight and as a result has further diversified the fandom and contributing to its growth. people show up to anthrocon's fursuit parade in huge numbers, many of them not even convention attendees. like thousands of people show up to this parade, the parade alone consisted of over 1800 fursuiters this year and raised over $42,000 in donations for charity, and at least a estimated minimum of 8,000 attendees. It's basically part of Pittsburgh's culture now, it's become a city tradition to have a fursuit parade that is organized by Anthrocon.

The bad rep is largely isolated to loudmouths on the internet anyway, coming from both sides.

In real life like no one cares and for those who aren't like internet dweebs that know the seedier side of the fandom and the feuds on the internet and they just associate it with Zootopia instead of pornography or calling someone a dog fucker.
