1. Steam Name?
2. Character Name?
3. Backstories?

my answers
1. i cant remember lol
2. I always always use a random name generator, unless I come up with a really funny name. For my event characters, I just use a random name.
3. i always find that once I play that my backstory is too shallow, I enjoy going in with little to no backstory and creating one as I play.

1. Steam Name?
my xbox name used to be xxsubspacexx when the idea of surrounding your name with x's was a new and epic thing, when i was trying to decide on a steam name i sort of just stole sub from xxsubspacexx and threw eh on the end of it for no apparent reason

Character Name?
i typically go through lists of the top 100 names for that particular nationality and pick one of the less common ones, or sometimes if the character has a name that was derived from a different nationality i'll just pick from that nationality's top 100 names

same applies for first and last name

3. Backstories?
start with something baseline and make it up as i go along, literally on the spot sometimes

steam name
on lemonpunch i was called I Like Trains Kid

cos of this

i was like 11

everyone used to call me trains so i just thought fuck it and shortened my name down

character name
josh murray was literally just randomly generated

genjo fai was cooked up in discord and liew laughed at me and said it’s shit

sahood masheed was recycled from a thing me and my friends made a while back lol

andrew sarchus, long-forgotten clockwork char, is the name of some random obscure extinct animal courtesy of walking with dinosaurs

backstories
i don’t really make backstories before i make a char, i literally just make them up as i go along and eventually condense it into something coherent when ive spat enough bullshit

yurrie always had it as my online username, i cant remember why i think i just thought it sounded cool

idk i just look on behindthename for the nationality of the char im making

most of my chars are loosely inspired by characters from anime or games i like tbh so i just think of a cool epic backstory and play off of it

bonus: momuline broth (my steam name when i joined neb, had it as my forum name for a while)

originally i was doing a bit with my friend where he was sandy hook truth and i was columbine truth, i know its edgy but that was kindof the joke, we were making fun of conspiracy theorist weirdos like alex jones and playing cs:go comp mode. one of my friends said it made them uncomfortable but i didnt feel like making it yurrie so i just switched some letters around and made it momuline broth

momuline broth has a more interesting backstory compared to my actual username lol

New 1. Steam Name?
used to play on a serious militaryrp server and changed my name after coming back from a break cause i didnt want my old faction(?) leads to notice (i dont think they’d remember me regardless lol)

chose mute cause r6s was popular and i didnt use my mic

eventually became good friends/a sidekick to the australian base commander and he frequently got drunk while playing and began calling me mootmoot which evolved into mootee (used mute when i signed up on the forums and thats what everyone calls me so its too late now)

Character Name?
Either a random name gen or i look up a list of the most popular names and surnames and pick and choose

if its from a language/culture i know i usually think one up myself

sometimes i base them off popular chars from media/TV with slight tweaks (different surname/name, shortened version of names, combining multiple chars, etc)

3. Backstories?
Dont write backstories unless necessary cause i feel like it restricts my char too much, usually when i do i keep it pretty basic

usually write them on the fly and base them off some char from a piece of media ive recently consumed, or a char idea thats popped into my head, sometimes i browse old char bios for inspiration

1. Steam Name?

Same as my forums name. I used to be called 'Hunterwho43' then just 'HunterWho', because my name is Hunter and I liked doctor who a few years ago. Then I changed it to Flanders when I got into neb because I wanted something that wasn't my name. I picked flanders because I wanted something that was easy to say, easy to remember, and imposed a sense of character.

2. Character Name?

Stone, because he likes collecting shiny rocks and humans used that as his nickname.

1. November and i dont remember where I pulled the trox from, its literally more than 8 years ago

2. (First) Seth Locker was, to be downright honest, randomized.
(MAIN/current) Nagayasu Asano was modeled after the veery real Asano clan.
Naming was also coherent and in accordance with descendants of the specific region I picked

3.
fuck backstories
hate writing backstories

I usually keep backstories for apps and stuff for a reason because I am terrible when it comes to long-term planning along a story which stems from my impatience in writing and style, which is affected by my varying disposition for ideas and what I currently have on my mind

1. Jew boy

2. The last character i played was italian alfanso scaramucci who got his name when i tried my hardest to think of the most stereotypical italian name possible

3. Backstories are created on a whim before i apply for events or whitelists and have no bearing on any of my characters

1. It is impossible to complete our present discussion without referring to the creature who reportedly emerges at the end of history, the last man.

2. Bong Bo sounded funny and Alplands-Murphy was named after McMurphy

3. write down ideas and stick to them

steam name: really enjoyed kotor as a kid, so i ended up putting revan on my steam account, roblox account/whatever game i was into at the time.

the comrade came from an IRL thing when i was like 13 or so. i was into russian stuff, so a few friends called me 'comrade' as a joke, so i just slapped it on my profile name.

character names: the base names are p random, just w/e i find that i like at the time. usually the character nicknames have some sort of thinking to them, usually to reflect the char's personality or w/e.

backstories: i always end up making this first. i'll choose a country, then a region of the country, what makes it stand out/dialects of accent etc etc, and then i'll prob just make general notes of what they did at certain ages, and it gradually becomes more refined as i put more time into the character.

1. Steam Name?: It's my name and then Voice because I'm trying to get into voice acting
2. Character Name?: I pulled the name Grady Warner out of thin fuckin air. Wilson Hammerstone was a character that kept showing up in my highschool video projects as a joke so I used it.
3. Backstories?: I write the characters backstory before they even are made because I'm a fucking clown

1. Steam Name? Intel Pentium Dual core G2030 3.0Ghz, was my first CPU in a build. Changed it a little and people still change it to this day with funny remarks.
2. Character Name? I sometimes take real world names into consideration. Happened with s few characters of mine, the rest are absolutely random.
3. Backstories? I have an idea for the character and expand on it, it depends whether I get really in depth with the character to whether I make a biography post or not.

1. Steam Name?
FreeSpy443 came from when I was like 8 or smn, and I liked TF2 a lot and thought the spy was cool. I thought the spy would go to jail but then be free, and then that he's the 443rd spy in the world to be freed

2. Character Name?
I've been using random name generators, but I've also had names that stuck with me (Jeremy Matthews/Monster which was monolith, Alexei Sobiesky, one of my first ever characters on a diff hl2rp server which ran for a year and got shot as a high ranking copper, and idk the rest)

3. Backstories?
I make characters I want to play for a general role (MedicalRP, skilled combat, engineer, etc) and then i research the topic for a while, make a few stories that define the char, and go with it, which they also have a tint of my views such as Steven
(Kelly Park - IRA nurse who is good with improv medical, stories about dealing with GSWs, etc during the more peak IRA stuff)
(Steven Kaller - Political yet good nurse who worked in high pressure situations before but still crumbles when his friends fall due to some of his mates killing themselves, etc)

1. Steam Name?

I've been a big fan of Lloyd Alexander's The Chronicles of Prydain since I was in elementary school. From my first account on a local BBS in 1992, and in subsequent online communities (Westwood Online [playing a ton of Red Alert 2 on a 28k modem], GameSpy) my online name has always been Taran or some variant.

My current name came in 2000, when I made an account on zone.com to play Jedi Knight. Someone had already taken the Taran moniker, so I was forced to change my name. Hating the "triple-x" and "name-number" style of account names (which I thought were pretty garish), I simply decided to go for an extended version of what I already had. When I first created my Steam Account 4 years later*, I kept the name and it's been with me ever since.

It also has the added bonus of being able to determine, depending on the reaction to the name, both maturity and the ability to fully read consonants.

*JFC, my account turned 17 years old on April 18...
2. Character Name?

They usually come from one of two places.

The first set (Sarah Walker [LP], Cecilia Baker, Lomahongva, and Julia Grant) are composites of friends, family members, coworkers, or people who I'm reasonably familiar with on a day-to-day basis. The names of the people I reference are nowhere reflective of the personalities I play in-game.

The second set (Seong Myung-hwa, Kinley Tenzing, Lomahongva, Butach Nerguei, and Noriko Kubo) are based on a study of etymologies. I'm always on the lookout for names that fit my initial character sketch and their internal motivations.

3. Backstories?

It's a composite of fundamentals.

First are initial conditions - who makes up their immediate family, how close are the characters to their siblings and parents, what is the family like in public and behind closed doors, etc?

Second, are ethical convictions - how do they view other people, how do they rationalize their life during the day-to-day, and are they religious or do they believe in some other moral code?

Third is a look at the broader society in which they live - is there a kind of class/caste system in which they're pegged to, do they benefit from the society they were a part of, and are there any cultural mores or taboos that they to work with or live under?

Lastly is a general sketch of their last ten to fifteen years - when things started changing to the setting of the server, were they singled-out by the authorities, did they keep their head down, or did they have a skill or talent that might have drawn interest from some faceless bureaucrat?

From there, it's broader research into the culture of each character - although I'll only discuss three at the moment. In the case of Cecilia, it was a personal study into my own adolescence - complete with constant chafing against the quasi-caste system of the American Midwest. For Seong, it was based on hundreds of pages of testimony and oral histories of defectors from the DPRK, especially from Chongjin, and the average North Korean's sincere desire for unification with the South. And with Lomahongva, her story sprang from living on the edge of the Hopi reservation and being a caretaker for two of their most important migration sites - complete with discussion about the prophecies of the end of the Fourth World (the one which we inhabit) and the transition to the Fifth.
