fuckin amazing. Played it for 2 hours before my controllers died since i didnt recharge my batteries, but its so FUCKING fun. I love the gravity gloves, i love throwing things at russel. I love the shooting. The enviroments look beautiful even on medium settings. I am having a blast.

So, after 9(!) hours of gameplay I finished half life: alyx. It was pretty good despite some flaws, mainly related to the weapons/ammo and resin. Pistol and AR2 ammo was plenty, shotgun ammo was rare even tho i always used it when I could. Weapon upgrades themself seemed somewhat unimportant to me because I only used the pistol, so i never upgrade anything else (besides the grenade launcher shotgun) and in the end i was sitting on 27 resin when ending the game. Chapter 5 went on for a bit too long and Jeff part was the best part of the entire game in my opinion. All in all, it's worth trying out. Ending was kinda shitty tho but eh, i guess.

I was bored and as per roleplayer tradition I decided to overanalyze Half-Life

Taken from a convo w/ a friend:

[doublepost=1585828827][/doublepost]It’s also stated that the time between the Resonance Cascade and the 7HW was only a few days in a newspaper. By that frame of reference, the occupation has been going on since 2003.

Meaning unlike what some people are suggesting (often because of their dissatisfaction with particular lore details), Half-Life: Alyx is NOT early occupation, and is still quite late into it— five years before Gordon.

You know I'm 90% certain they confirmed she was 19 in HL:A themselves too.

Nice.

The intro of the game directly says "five years before Gordon Freeman's arrival" or something so I dunno if people misunderstood how early it was with the whole "citadel being built" bit.

I mean, I don’t think fifteen years is going to make people forget that the Combine committed mass genocide in the 7HW and that humanity lost Earth.
I guess it’ll always be “fresh” in their minds for people who witnessed it.

My lil theory for ota is that they have something similar going on with that black mirror episode about soldiers that have those implants or whatever which heavily alters their perceptions. They still display basic human emotions and behaviour but are augmented in a way that allows them to kill people the same way they’d squash an insect or something.

See, I never got around to warming up to the concept of Combine Soldiers lacking emotion, or an emotional response. The image of a stoic, logistic code-spewing automaton is laughable at best. We're effective, capable fighters solely due to some of our most basic instinctive, emotional responses. Who's more likely to survive? The Combine Soldier unable to avoid dangerous, costly risks, and cannot fight furiously out of rage, if needed... Or the Combine Soldier who's able to evaluate the situation, avoid unnecessary loss of life, and who will fight tooth, and nail. You'd figure the Combine would treasure this, not stomp it out.

So, if anything, I'm leaning more towards your theory, than the former. Bottom line is, Valve had them exchange some bro-tier banter.

hypothesis: advisors are galactic middle men

the scene with "the apologist" or "the contractor" or "administrator" or w/e is very exciting to me

it essentially confirms that there is a civil authority that exists beyond Breen - likely what is referred to as the "City 17 Security Council" on the poster

very nice

my theory on gman's employers is that they're some sort of interdimensional organisation that are against the combine(but not necessarily 'good' themselves) who are trying to find/recruit the best combatants for their fight against them. After alyx requests the combine be removed from earth, gman says "that would be a considerably large nudge. too large, given the interests of my employers", suggesting that his employers are obviously interested in the fighting capabilities of alyx/gordon/humanity. there's no other reason they wouldn't kick the combine off earth if they have the power(which it seems like they do). it'd explain why gman delivered the unstable crystal to black mesa in the first place which resulted in the combine's arrival, but also adds on to the notion that his employers aren't 'good' themselves as they sacrificed an entire planet/species for their agenda

i don't think that's a hypothesis. i think that's a given considering their names. like, they're meant to advise over earth and possibly a few other remote, barren worlds, that sort of stuff. advisors are merely nothing more than another link in a never-ending bureaucratic chain of who knows what.

even more, the only thing worth advising on earth is ensuring the seizing of human teleportation technology. and even then, the advisors aren't doing their job all that well, considering the combine were aware of the location of both black mesa east & kleiner's lab long before gordon decided to trot around but didn't act. on top of that, they don't seem to take the words of humans, let alone breen seriously

the excuse for them not having crushed the resistance instantly is because they wanted to let them develop teleportation technology further before seizing it

earth to the combine is like america leaving five soldiers to guard their embassy in iraq, it's so insignificant in the grand scheme of things

a more accurate comparison is US forces in west africa

barely even mentioned, barely thought about, just kind of there, no real strategy, leaving it up to the national militias and armies to police themselves

So I just finished the game,

At the post-cutscene part, where Eli gets up and Dog hands you the crowbar, the amount of chills I got were insurmountable (same as the beginning of the game when you're sneaking past the CPs). Holy shit this game was fantastic, my optimism is at an all-time high, Valve don't leave it here pls
