Think of it like this: when the original DOOM came out, everybody jumped on the FPS bandwagon. There was droves of FPS games, which back then were just called DOOM clones, because everybody accused them of just copying DOOM's format because it was a trendy game. However, some of the "imitators" ended up pushing the genre further and further. Star Wars: Dark Forces, Marathon, Duke Nukem 3D.

As time progressed, games built on the original formula. Quake took advantage of 3D accelerated graphics cards. Half-Life was among the first games to walk the line between "narrative overload" and "shooting gallery". 007: Goldeneye showed that there was a market for console shooters, and Halo proved that you could have tight FPS controls on a controller. Games like Operation Flashpoint gave people unprecedented open worlds to play with. Half-Life 2 pioneered the use of a physics engine for actual gameplay. FEAR gave us convincing, fun-to-fight AI. The list goes on and on and on.

If you throw away every game in an up-and-coming genre because "it's a cash-in on a trend", then we wouldn't be here right now, so stop being an insufferable hipster and just... don't play the game if you don't like it.
