Do you know if you can use the controllers and shit on a relatively poor PC? Like - if you get a headset capable of playing it independently, would that work?
steam has a vr benchmark available

other than that idk - my old pc was an x4 760k and 750ti with 8gb ram iirc and that was just borderline too low for vr although you could probably get it working on minimum settings at 60-80fps

are you talking about a standalone all in one unit though? idk but I wouldn't risk it personally - will be making a bang for buck vr pc build without the headset included on a part list soon though for people without a pc capable of running the benchmark

here it is boys

The Valve Index Controllers are only specific to the Index and HTC Vive.

That bottom part is wrong.
HOWEVER:

If you buy the standalone headset such as the Oculus Quest then you have purchase Oculus's "touch controllers"

What would you recommend to someone on a budget? Should I look into the mixed reality thing, or should I deck out some more money for a Vive/Oculus? It‘s not like I don‘t have enough cash, but I wanna save as much money as possible for VR Games and stuff. I was also looking to get a new TV soon so yeah.

It really depends on what your situation is. People say the Vive Index is good, but it's almost 800 dollars. Coincidentally, if you bought that on steam right now, it'd come with Half Life: Alyx bundled in. The Oculus Quest is 400 dollars, and it's really impressive, so that's probably going to be better than just getting an Oculus Rift, which is the same cost. However, I'm not 100 percent sure the Oculus Quest or any other VR headset is fully compatible with Steam VR, which has the best VR games. There's probably some workarounds for it though.

You really want to make sure you get something that suits you. As @Merlinsclaw said, the HTC Vive is out there and is OK, but speaking from someone who's owned one, its kind of a pain in the ass. It relies on cameras, so if you have obstacles in the way, you could ruin your tracking. The wire setup is also such a pain in the ass. You have like 4+ cables you need to connect, and they're heavy. The Oculus Rift has one USB cable, and it's super easy to connect. The Rift's controllers are OK. The Index has better controllers, and soon the Quest is going to let you track your hands without any controllers.

The new versions of the Oculus actually have cameras on the headset. How it worked in at least the version of the HTC Vive I had, is that you had to have cameras mounted to either side of your room. It never worked that well for me. I've never had an issue with the Oculus though, and it was fun as hell to run around my living room without any constraints. I don't have any experience with any other VR headset besides the HTC Vive, the Oculus Rift, and PSVR. Take this with a grain of salt, but any budget one is probably not going to be the best for gaming. With VR, you get what you pay for. Oh, and pirating VR games is easy as hell. There's like no DRM for them.

TL;DR: If you want to go balls to the wall, get the Valve Index. It's the most expensive VR headset out there, but it's made by Valve and has native support with Steam VR, and cool controllers. If you're on a budget, really just go for either the Oculus Rift or the Oculus Quest. Look into both of those and see if they suit your needs. IMO, skip the HTC Vive. There's better stuff on the market, especially for the price.

How long can you play on the Quest before the battery runs out? Also, how can you connect the quest to Steam if it‘s basically a phone, which isn‘t connected to your pc?

Honestly the trailer gave me a boner.

But I don't have VR. I really do not want to buy VR. It's such a niche thing that I'd only use for this and pornography that it wouldn't even be worth it. It disappoints me to see valve only bothering to give Half-Life some love for the sole purpose of plugging their VR hardware.

The battery lasts like 2 hours of gaming. You can connect to the PC by means of Oculus Link, which is just a USB cable IIRC.

There are a lot of good games for VR. Pavlov is really freaking fun.

Yeah tbh I don't find that enjoyable. I'd want games I can really immerse myself in notsomething with shitty minecraft game aesthetic. Most VR things I've seen besides like Elite Dangerous (which isn't solely VR yay uwu) seem really...I unno, tacky? Offputting? It felt like playing a Kinect game but some how worse.
