FREE TERRITORY OF MADYAS
[OF THE] CONFEDERACY OF BARANGAY STATES
1447 --

Free from the tyranny of yore; we, now freemen and brethren of the seas, forfeit thy lives and swear by-thus, to the Articles of Agreements; with respect to our Paramount Leaders, and in accordance to the sanctified laws of the land;

I. He who serves, shall be given the right of vote to affairs of the moment; each man shall have equal title for everyday living, and shall be given fair share of divvy and prize in accordance with their duty, from Paramount to Crew.

II. Each shall have the chance, if suited, to fair vote to the matters of the Ship; to matters of the Fleet; and, wherein circumstances are right, to matters of the Land. He that may have sorrows, has right to cast them to either wind, or to Crew.

III. He that shall be found Guilty of Cowardice or Defraudment, shall suffer what punishment the Captain and Majority see fit. He that shall be found Guilty of Desertion shall be marooned with one Bottle of Water and one provision of Arms.

IV. He who serves, shall answer to the whichever laws each Paramount or Captain may deem custom; each Ship may be headed by its own traditions, wherein each who serves there must abide.

Beginning as a loose coalition of Malaccan Strait pirates formed following the 1447 Panay Famine, the Free Territory of Madyas was an unofficial polity for much of its early years, operating as a free port for regional traders and pirates alike. It was known for its early form of democracy.

Whilst the specifics remain unknown, the Free Territory of Madyas' early years was filled with contention and years of conflict with its neighbours, leading to a series of wars that resulted in the formation of the Confederation of Barangay States sometime prior to the election of the Captain Paramount Bangkaya Karna in 1465. While largely insignificant, her rule should be credited for much of the early sectarian violence found on the Isles, having instigated lasting conflict between many of the differing indigenous rulers and cultures. It should be noted that before Bangkaya, as with Maduyog Batkcan, the Madyas' largely Malayan Elite were largely hands-off and conducted their rule on a mercantilistic basis.

Having been made chief to many of the Archipelago's rulers through various means, early documents note that the Free Territory of Madyas and by extension, the Confederation of Barangay States was notorious for significant internal violence during this era, often sectarian in nature and intended to prevent uprising. The extent of which is unknown, however, the insurrection of the Luzon Island remained a prominent issue to the Confederation for decades, with much of the former ruling class carving out a nascent independent Kingdom.

Despite the instability of this early Pirate Republic, the Free Territory was able to afford a largely undetetered external focus. Remaining upon a path of regional piracy, privateering and trade, it was able to establish the foundations of its later relationship with the Vijayanagara Empire, whose naval ambitions were often fulfilled by Madyas Pirates and Privateers.

Following the election of Captain Paramount Manooc Batarac in 1474, the Free Territory found itself increasingly involved in naval conflicts, and by 1475 the Madyas had become engaged in a full-blown conflict with its regional neighbour, the Sultanate of Brunei.

Culminating in the Invasion of Lehad Datu in 1478, the Madyas established a foothold outside of their native Archipelago, with territorial concessions enforced upon the Sultanate. With the Sultanate unable to unwedge the Madyas from the peninsula, the Free Territory had gained an unprecedented position within the region, and perhaps not desiring instability from the conquered lands, Manooc Batarac would have its rulers flayed until all were but dead. By 1479, the City of Lehad Datu was a free port, and whose governors, like that of the Free Territory, was taken from the Madyas.
