After the death of Christian The Great in 1525, his son Christoffer inherited the North Sea kingdom. Although his early reign began as promising; reducing corruption in the Danish court, securing the vassalisation of Dithmarschen, the conquest of Hamburg and securing the charter for Arctic American colonisation, he quickly was beset by poor decisions, debt and continental intrigues that mired the kingdom for much of the 16th century.

Christoffer's conversion to the Protestant faith split his own nobility and so began decades of religious conflict inside the realm, to compound this issue many separatist factions agitated for independence across the Baltic territories and British Isles, while a fresh war with England yielded little in new conquests, but much in further debt.

The final and most infamous moment of Christoffer's reign came in 1540, when he honoured a longstanding alliance with the Kingdom of Prussia - who was the target of a continental coalition. The war was disasterous; the Prussian army was routed in the field by Austria and peace was forced. In an attempt to save his own crown, the Prussian ruler unilaterally brokered peace against the wishes of Denmark, ceding Danish land to the the Holy Roman Empire. Lybæk had been torn from the realm, the economic centre of the Danish Realm. This betrayal permanently ended the Danish-Prussian alliance.

Two years later, Christoffer would be dead from a pneumonia that has swept through Copenhagen. After a short period of regency, his daughter would ascend to the throne in 1550.

The Princess of Denmark began her reign with the reconquest of Lubeck, unifying her titles into the Protector of all Free Cities, with an ambition to expand her control over North Sea ports. In addition, Ophelia has proven herself capable of extinguishing corruption in her realm; curbing the power of the merchant classes and unifying the disparate lands of Scotland, Ireland and Northern England under direct rule as the 'Western Isles' (relative to Scandinavia). Under her reign, Iceland was formally granted the status of a crown dependency.

Ophelia also has inherited her father's place as the dynastic leader of the Wittelsbach Royal House, a family that now collectively rules Denmark, Russia, France and Castille. With her affairs on the continent in order, Ophelia must restore the finances of the kingdom and continue colonial efforts in the north, attempting to maintain balance with French colonists along the southern American parallel.
