Only difference is Discord isn't a scumbag company who's selling your data for extra cash.

But its owned by the same person who was taken to court.

I implore you to watch the video and read the sources he has in his video description. Nothing more I can say on the matter.

I'm not going to bother watching the video, I've used Discord practically since it released. I have no issue using their service or them collecting data from their service to improve it in the future.

If you're concerned over data collection and your data being sold here's what you do stop using Google and Microsoft products. Both of those companies are advertising companies that collect data to sell for advertising purposes, I'm gonna guess you use Google and Windows which completely defeats the argument of Discord being a scam since they so far have not sold data unless you can provide evidence of that happening.

I am concerned over data collection. That's why I don't use google and instead use duckduckgo and Tor (I also use a VPN sometimes;softether VPN); as well as that I've modified my OS to prevent the data Microsoft collects while your using its operating system. Despite that I am aware you can't be one hundred 'safe' online from these type of things. Saying all that, If you don't want to watch the video I linked or take my advice that's fine. I only wanted to share the video for people to potentially watch it.

I'll humour this reply for a second, give me a detail about how you modified the OS to prevent data collection because I'm pretty sure you're chatting pure shit right now.

I don't really mind/care if discord collects my data like any other service that explicitly states it does and the uses behind it. Like, this has been going on for years, when you use your credit card, nectar card or even fucking buy a lolipop at a store with something digital it's being tracked so why care when discord does it. What kind of thing could you possibly post on discord that would make you worry about it being shared anyway. No one really cares if you posted a pic of yourself or anything like that and unless you're plotting a school shooting in a public channel I doubt anything is going to happen.

I'd also love to go back to discord

Sorry, I just read what I wrote again and It might seem somewhat misleading when I said modify. I hope you weren't under the impression I was coding or anything. It's just some simple registry edits, and disabling services that windows runs within 'Computer Management'; which they use to send the data back.

Here is picture of one of the registry edits:
vnfI5.png

Here is one of the services you can disable:
vnfZD.png

I'd show you others but I'm under the assumption you probably don't want to look at all of them. I'm not claiming this is infallible or anyway my 'work'(You can find the videos if you look for them on the internet). Its just a couple of things you can disable if you have the time.

Okay so you've done what every typical guide tells you to do that doesn't really disable much and still leaves it with 5,000+ daily requests to Microsoft.

I never claimed I did anything out of the ordinary; I can show you the other pictures if you like? I can also show you a video but apparently you don't like watching the ones I show you :(

Also I'm interested in this '5000' number where did you get it from? Or is that an exaggeration?

I literally linked to an article that tested the registry edits and other tools to see how much more it was sending. If you really want to prevent the telemetry, use the Enterprise version of Windows. The "AllowTemeletry" registry key does nothing when set to "0" on a Windows Home or Pro version.

Sorry I glossed over the link you showed me. Not seen or heard of that website before. Also not aware of 'telemetry' regedit only working on enterprise; can't seem to find anything supporting that claim either. I have disabled slash removed a lot of the trash that article recommended. Windows 10 also takes pictures of your desktop every ninety-minutes and sends it back to Microsoft. But you're able to turn that off. That said if there was anything you 'shouldn't be doing I wouldn't be using Windows 10 let alone a computer to do it.

Thanks for the replies though :ok:

in case anyone else is interested in stopping some of the windows 10 stuff, download this and configure to your liking. Obviously won't stop everything, but it certainly gets rid of some of the bigger fish.

to touch on Discord though:
if they wanna jerk off to my 5,000 messages of me testing my bot or the dozens of explicit messages i've sent, who cares???
like, will you ever meet the people who've read your messages, and will it ever affect your daily life? probably not.

put it another way: have you read every article on Wikipedia? no? same thing. they only look for what they're interested in, if/when they need to. I really doubt there's someone just sitting there going page by page through your details, mumbling to himself "oh that's some GOOD PERSONAL DATA THERE MAN"

free servers, good voice quality, nice interface, bot API, better chat system.

you can say whatever you want about discord being better than teamspeak (although I don't think so at all, especially regarding audio quality and connection issues)

BUT

i'd never rely on a software which doesn't allow federation for my own servers, I want to make sure everything runs as smooth as possible and having someone else do it for me for free, nah

whereas with teamspeak, you just need to generate a new unique id (and change vpn ip's if that's your fancy) to return to the server

not really, since a few years you also need to change something in the registry
and yes, you need to change vpn because teamspeak, besides banning you by a certain registry key, it also bans your persona ID and your IP.

I'm not going to bother watching the video, I've used Discord practically since it released. I have no issue using their service or them collecting data from their service to improve it in the future.

funny thing is now google is working on an anti-advertisement option for chrome which is supposed to block "disturbing" advertisements, google being the owner of the biggest advertisements platform basically means in my opinion they will jeopardize adverts

Think you're overestiminating how much data collection Discord use to be honest. TeamSpeak bans don't require a registry edit, just change the identity on the settings and your IP and you're good to go.

Either way, as soon as Discord has the channel categories update or our TS license runs out we'll likely switch. We trust them, it's more reliable and the voice quality is higher.

The only reason I would never join the TeamSpeak server, is because it's TeamSpeak. If we switched to Discord, I would join faster than you can say 'yiff me daddy'.

Now I don't know much about Teamspeak, but Discord releases very frequent updates based on user feedback. You can even vote for new features to be added, or start your own votes.

And there are other large communites using Discord, /r/overwatch being probably the biggest (about 2k members online at the same time on a lousy day). And they don't seem to have any trouble with that.

Biggest issue we have with Discord right now is organisation of channels, we have a lot of channels for each server, staff channels and various other random channels; It doesn't cope well with that layout visually and it's annoying to us, the current lack of a Server Log for kicks, bans and other actions is an issue too.
